If there is one thing that intimidates many DIY enthusiasts, especially those thinking about tackling a kitchen renovation on their own, is getting it right and doing a professional job. Making cupboards and drawer units is easy... once you know how and making basic or decorative doors is also easy... if you have the right tools.

Cupboard Carcass

When making wall-mounted or floor cupboards from scratch, the first thing you need to do is assemble the carcass. The carcass is the frame that gives the cupboard its size and shape and you can make this to any dimensions which means that you can make cupboards of any size - to fit any space. This is not the case with ready-made kitchen cupboards that are only manufactured in standing sizes.

• Consider your options

You have options when it comes to the material for making the carcass for any type of cabinet. The cheapest would be BisonBord (chipboard) but this isn't a long-lasting or durable option, and it also cannot be painted. The next would be SupaWood if you plan on painting the cupboards. Then there is BisonLam or SupaLam, both of which are laminated BisonBord or SupaWood with a white laminated finish. And finally, there is veneered plywood. This is an affordable solution if you are wanting a wood-finish kitchen and you can select a particular wood species veneer.

Front Facing for the Cupboard

Although not many will use this option, if you are making the cupboards using veneered plywood or hardwood, adding a front face on the cabinets is easy.

Cupboard Doors

There are plenty of different door designs to choose from and it all depends on the look you want in a kitchen. Personally, I love Shaker-style doors and they are quick and easy to make with no fancy joints and no special tools required. But there are those among us who prefer the fancy joints and extra details that go into doors for cupboards.

Investment Tools

The majority of tools used in the above videos are Kreg tools. This globally renowned brand is well-known for its innovation and leading edge when it comes to pocket hole joinery. While the average DIY enthusiast doesn't need to invest in all the tools, owning a Kreg Pocket Hole Jig is a must, as is investing in their hardware jigs that aid in installing cupboard doors and drawers. These tools can save you a lot of time and effort and not only when making cupboards or cabinets.

Make it Easier

I am not embarrassed to state that I am not a woodworking or carpentry expert. I am more of a DIY PDQ kind of person. I love DIY but I don't want to spend hours and hours making joints to fit everything together. If this is you and you prefer to get stuff done quick, pop into our Kitchen Improvement section where you will find plenty of tutorials for making kitchen cabinets, drawer units, door styles and more.
