Affordable kitchen updates

When your kitchen needs an update and you don't have a lot to spend, there are many ways to affordably give a kitchen a new look - even on the tightest budget.

Replacing old door with framed glass doors is one way to transform a kitchen. Have 12mm MDF cut to the size of each door.

1. Have all your glass cut to size and delivered.

2. Remove all the doors and place the glass panels on the back of each door. Mark around with a pencil line.

Note: If your doors are melamine you will need to mark on the front of each door. Use a sharp craft knife to score along the line to the depth of the board. This will give you a much neater edge.

3. At each corner - on the inside of the marked line - use a spade bit or drill bit to create a hole to insert the jigsaw blade.

4. Cut out the marked area with the jigsaw.

5. On the front of the door, use the cut out rectangle to work out the lengths for the moulding to create the frame for the glass.

The moulding needs to sit halfway over the opening to be able to support the glass that is inserted from the back.

Use a mitre box to cut the moulding for perfect corners.

6. Attach the moulding to the front of the door using wood glue and panel pins. Use Pattex Acrylic Sealer to fill in any gaps. Leave to dry.

7. Place the door face down and insert the glass.

8. There are various ways to secure the glass

- Transparent glass clips can be attached to hold the glass. Some silicon between the door and glass will help prevent rattling.

- Silicone sealer can be applied around the perimeter and left to dry.

- A quarter-round bead can in fitted. Use panel pins to attach and be sure to protect the glass with a piece of cardboard and use a nail set to sink the head of the nail into the wood.
