Do you have to have a Kitchen Backsplash?

Do we need to have a backsplash in the kitchen, and does it have to be tile?

Most older homes have a backsplash installed but newer and more contemporary homes give the homeowner the option to choose the type of backsplash they want and there is definitely more than tile to consider. A backsplash installed above a hob and/or stovetop is a must to keep the kitchen clean; it is designed to protect walls and surfaces from grease and food splashes and make it easier to clean. A backsplash above a basin or sink protects the wall or surface from water and moisture. But nowadays, there are plenty of styles to consider when considering installing a backsplash and a backsplash doesn't have to be tiled:

In a rustic, cottage, or country kitchen, leave a brick wall raw or apply a whitewash to incorporate a vintage feel!

1. Organic Beauty

With the shift towards natural and organic materials, raw brick can be transformed into a beautiful and eye-catching feature in any home, including a kitchen. Whether the kitchen is traditional or contemporary, brick can blend into any decor scheme. The only preparation for a brick wall as a backsplash is to use a brick sealer on the wall beforehand to protect it from moisture and steam. For easy cleaning, apply 2 to 3 coats of polyurethane sealer to wipe away grease and food splatters.

2. Paint it Pretty

Those who are not a fan of tiled walls can rest easy in the knowledge that today's paints can withstand a lot and, with the right paint, there is no reason why you cannot forego traditional tiled walls in favour of a painted finish that is fully washable.

Concrete pairs well with modern countertops and brings an edgy feel to a rustic, modern, or contemporary kitchen!

3. Contemporary Concrete

Concrete and cementitious finishes are increasingly popular for today's modern and contemporary homes looking at building with sustainability in mind. Not only is concrete durable and long-lasting, but it is also perfect for finishing floors and walls and is affordable as well. Add pigment for colour and a sealer to protect the finish and you can have a contemporary concrete backsplash in the kitchen. Concrete is becoming increasingly popular in both building and finishing houses and is a great way to add an edgy feel to a home interior, plus it is practically maintenance-free and good for a lifetime or more.

A unique and one-of-a-kind feature as a kitchen backsplash is to dig out your savings jar, polish up a stack of cents and use these for the backsplash!

4. Shimmering Metallic

Metallic finishes always add warmth to any room where they are used and will do the same in a kitchen. Brass, stainless steel, copper, and more, these metals bring a new design element when installed as a backsplash in the kitchen. Match up with copper accents already in the kitchen or use copper tiles or sheet to add a shimmering backsplash focal point. And here's a tip where you can put your savings to good use... Dig out your jars of cents, polish them up, and stick them onto the wall for a unique backsplash that won't cost you more than... A few cents!
