Woodoc Water-Borne or Solvent-Based?
When stripping and sealing floors you have two options for finishing. Woodoc have a range of sealers that are water-borne or solvent-based and while both are penetrating sealers, there is a difference between the two:
Water-borne floor sealers are virtually odourless and dry quickly and are considered more environmentally friendly than solvent-based sealers. Using a water-borne sealer means you can finish a project and won't have to wait as long to move back into the room. Water-borne sealers are available in clear or white finishes, as well as the full spectrum of fashion shades and wood shades - in gloss or matt - that can be applied to all types of indoor wooden floors or stairs.
Solvent-based floor sealers take longer to dry, but these sealer enhance the natural beauty of wood. You also have the option to add a colour tint or natural wood shade to solvent-based sealers, giving you flexibility for choosing the perfect colour for a wood floor.
Both floor sealers penetrate deeply into the wood and provide a strong, hard-wearing finish on floors that protects against water and stains. Because Woodoc Water-Borne Floor is non-yellowing, it is recommended for use with the fashion shades, especially the lighter shades, rather than the solvent-based product.
Easy to apply, Woodoc Water-Borne Sealer in white (gloss or matt) should be stirred well before use - and during application - to ensure the colour is dispersed in the product. Follow these tips for proper application:
1. The wood floor must be clean and dry. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove all traces of dust from the surface and any spaces between boards and around the edges.
2. Use a good quality paintbrush to apply the product.
3. Apply the first coat, working in small areas at a time. You want the surface to remain evenly glossy/wet for at least 10 minutes after application. If the wood floor is extremely dry and soaks up the product immediately, apply more product to dull or dry areas.
4. After allowing the product to dry completely, sand the surface with 180-grit sandpaper and then remove any dust with a vacuum cleaner. This is an important step, as sanding removes excess sealer from the surface - allowing the second coat to be absorbed into the surface of the wood floor.
5. Two more coats are required, with sanding between the second and third coats. By applying a total of 3 coats, the product will be able to penetrate and bind with the wood and provide a flexible yet strong and resistant finish for normal domestic traffic.
GOOD TO KNOW: The newly finished floor can withstand light traffic after 24 hours and normal use after 7 days.
Woodoc solvent-based sealer can be tinted in a various of trendy colours, including Clifton Grey and Beaufort Grey, and you can choose a satin or matt finish. Colours are easily applied by mixing them into the solvent-based sealer for uniform colour application.
Follow these tips for proper application of solvent-based sealer:
1. Make sure the wood floor is clean and dry. Go over the floor with a vacuum cleaner to remove all traces of dust.
2. Using a quality paintbrush to apply the product will reduce the risk of bristles spoiling the finish.
3. Working in small areas as you go - apply the first coat. The surface should remain evenly glossy/wet for at least 10 minutes after application. Where wood is extremely dry and soaks up the product immediately, apply more product to these areas.
4. After allowing the product to dry completely, sand the surface lightly with Woodoc steel wool and then remove any debris with a vacuum cleaner. This is an important step, as the steel wool removes excess sealer from the surface - allowing the second coat to be absorbed into the surface of the wood floor.
5. Two more coats are required, with sanding between the second and third coats. By applying a total of 3 coats, the product will be able to penetrate and bind with the wood and provide a flexible yet strong and resistant finish for normal domestic traffic.
GOOD TO KNOW: The newly finished floor can withstand light traffic after 48 hours.
