Refresh grout
In a rental home, or any home for that matter, grout can become grubby and stained. While a regular scrubbing will restore somewhat, for grout that is too far gone to be restored - it's time to remove and replace.
This is an easy task if you have a Dremel MultiTool with Grout Attachment as this tool makes light work of cleaning or removing old grout. Use a spray bottle to wet the grout with concentrated lemon juice or a mixture of Jik and water over a small area. Leave on for 2 to 3 minutes and then use your Dremel MultiTool and brush attachment, scrubbing brush or old toothbrush to go over the grout.
Replacing stained grout is a quick and affordable way to give a bathroom a makeover - and if you live in a rental home, the landlord won't even know! Follow our step-by-step guide to quick and easy grout removal and replacement and give your bathroom or kitchen an instant facelift.
Paint tiles
While not considered a permanent option, painting over tiles does offer a way to achieve a new look without the mess and cost of replacing existing tiles. However, with the proper preparation and on a matt tile, this option will last quite some time.
The two most recommended methods of painting over tiles is to use Rust-Oleum Specialty Tub & Tile Refreshing Kit on glossy tiles, or an oil-based paint, such as Plascon Velvaglo oil-based enamel - or use the correct primer and apply a water-based acrylic paint.
Cover old flooring
You don't have to live with dingy floors when there's an easy and inexpensive way to cover up. Vinyl flooring planks can be installed over existing flooring that is in good condition. This type of flooring is perfect in high traffic areas in the home such as bathrooms, a kitchen, dining room or living room and are ideal for heavy residential use. With this elegant luxury floor, you are sure to have a long lasting beauty in any room. And the beauty is that you can easily install over existing floors that are in good condition.
Disguise drab tiled floos with colourful rugs. Have a custom rug manufactured to fit in with your personal style, or purchase a ready-made rug that fits the space.
Fill gaps
Have a tube of acrylic sealer handy to fill gaps around cornice or crown moulding, door and window frames, and any other areas that have gaps. An acrylic sealer is best for this, as it is easily painted over once dry. For the bathroom, use a sanitary silicone sealer that contains fungicide to reduce the risk of mildew or mould growth.
Refresh walls
You need nothing more than a can of paint, painting equipment and a couple of hours to give any room in a home a new, refreshing look. Before you start painting, take the time to fill any cracks or imperfections.
Even in a rental home, you might have a place you love, excluding the colour scheme but even If you aren’t able to repaint you can easily work with the colour scheme, no matter how bland it is.
If the landlord won't co-operate when it comes to painting, don't despair... Even a boring white batrhroom can be given some colour with towels and bathroom accessories in bold, bright colours. A quick visit to your favourite home decor store will soon have your bathroom dressed in rainbow colours
