Clean and repair gutters

With all the rain you have probably noticed more than a few problems with the guttering on your home and here's how to fix up a few minor problems.

The Gauteng region has seen more than its fair share of rain over the past few months, while the Eastern and Western Cape sit without rain. With all the rain you have probably noticed more than a few problems with the guttering on your home. Here's how to fix up a few minor problems:

YOU WILL NEED:

Gloves (optional)

Clean rags and a solvent (such as acetone)

Paintbrush or putty knife

Fibreglass resin - gutter sealant

Scissors or tin snips

Wire brush or abrasive paper

Fibreglass or metal patch

Pop rivets and rivet gun (for metal patches)

HERE'S HOW:

1. Clean area with a wire brush or abrasive paper.

Wipe area with solvent and allow to dry.

Cut a patch to cover the area plus 50mm all around if using fibreglass, 50mm longer for a metal patch.

See below for information on A.B.E Cold Laykold Tape.

2. For a fibreglass patch, apply a thin coat of mixed resin to the gutter with a paintbrush, as shown. Be careful not to touch the resin.

For a metal patch, spread a 3mm layer of sealant with a putty knife.

3. Press patch into adhesive with a rag.

Fibreglass – apply a thin coat of resin over patch, wait 24 hours, sand, and apply another coat.

Metal – rivet patch both ends; spread sealant over edges and let dry.
