Medicines Definition
According to KidsHealth, medicines are chemical compounds used to cure diseases. They also halt or prevent diseases and ease symptoms. There are some medicines that help in the diagnosis of illness.
Medicines have helped doctors cure many diseases and save many lives. Thanks to the help of medical contract manufacturing companies, reliable medical devices run smoothly.
Long before, medicines come from limited sources. Now, the sources vary greatly. Because people have been so innovative and resourceful, they have developed medicines that substances can be found in nature.
The number of extracted substances from various medicinal plants has increased. On the other hand, most medicines are made in laboratories. Different chemicals are mixed together to accomplish a formula. Penicillin is known to be a byproduct of organisms like fungus.
This might sound creepy to you. But, there are a few medicines that are biologically engineered. Genes are inserted into bacteria in order to produce a certain substance.
How Medicines Work
When talking about taking medicines, you
initially think of pills. To correct that,
medicines can be delivered in many ways.
There are liquid medicines that can be
swallowed. Some are in the form of drops so you
will drop them into the ears or eyes. Medicines
like creams, gels, or ointments are rubbed onto
the skin to take effect.
Inhalers are also medicines. Examples are nasal sprays and asthma inhalers. When you’re having back pains or any other joint pains, you use patches on your skin.
Tablets are known as pills. Do you place tablets under your tongue? You may already have swallowed thousands of tablets without knowing the right way of taking them.
The most feared medicine by many is injections. Injections are called intravenous medicines. It means they are inserted into a vein.
Furthermore, medicines requires to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before they are sold. Medicine makers who test new medicines must submit the results to the FDA. The FDA ensures that new medicines are working and safe enough.
They only allow new medicines when they actually work. When the benefits are greater than the risks, FDA will approve the sale of the drug. Anytime there are harmful side effects, FDA can immediately withdraw the medicine from the market.
Additionally, medicines are manufactured with ptfe seal, just like how quality and high-end plastic perfume box packaging are done. They ensure that there will be no leakage of the drugs being processed.
Types of Medicines
1. Antibiotic - Almost everyone has taken an antibiotic. It is a type of medicine that fights bacterial infections. Doctors may prescribe antibiotics when you have an open wound, sore throat, or ear infection.
They either kill or stop the multiplication of the bacteria. Thus, antibiotics work this way so the immune system can fight back from the infection.
2. Insulin - A human body isn’t perfect. Sometimes, a part of it can’t produce enough chemicals. This is the reason why you become sick sometimes. Doctors prescribe medicines to replace missing hormones.
In the case of insulin-dependent diabetes, the pancreas can’t produce enough insulin. As you know, insulins are types of hormones that regulate glucose in the body.
Unfortunately, some people produce fewer thyroid hormones. They are supposed to help control how energy is being used.
3. Pain Relievers - This is a type of medicine that relieves pain. If you are strained or pulled a muscle, the doctor recommends you take ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Pain relievers temporarily block the pathway of pain signals so they won’t be transmitted from the injured part to the brain. It means they affect the way the brain accepts the message of the pain signal. Then, you will think that it’s not hurting anymore until your body recovers.
4. Immunizations - This medicine keeps people from getting sick. When we are still babies, immunizations (or vaccines) have already been injected into our bodies. It contains a small amount of agent resembling a specific germ which was already been killed.
Immunizations introduce the immune system to the “germ” and help remember it. With this, the body’s immune system will be able to fight the germ in the future. There may be times that these germs will meet you again.
Immunizations are now available in many pharmacies. It’s very convenient.
5. Injections - This is closely related to immunization since they are given through injection. Immunizations prevent you from having measles or chickenpox.
These are the type of shots that many people would avoid. But, think of the diseases they have prevented compared to the temporary discomfort it brings during the shot.
Conclusion
Can you imagine a world without these medicines? They have truly played a big role in the preservation of human life. A disease that was unknown in the previous years is slowly being cured due to the discovery of medicines.
