You can restore old garden furniture

Grab a can or two of Rust-Oleum spray paint and give your garden furniture, flower pots and containers, rusted accessories, and even wood, a makeover!

Vintage patio furniture has a rustic charm that modern furniture simply cannot compare to. It's a look that says I'm old and loved. Don't toss out that old metal patio set simply because it's covering in flaking paint and rust.

With Rust-Oleum you CAN transform old, rusty furniture into colourful furniture for a garden. And to show you how easy it is, we found an old, rusted metal garden bench for our makeover.

HERE'S HOW:

To start off we sanded down the garden bench with 80-grit sandpaper to remove as much rust as possible. We did discover a few spots where the rust had left holes in the metal, and to fix this up we use Alcolin QuikSteel to fix up. This is a 2-part epoxy putty that is kneaded together and then applied. It dries to a rock hard finish. The trick is to sand the QuikSteel before if sets too hard, at which time sanding becomes very labour intensive. Use 120-grit sandpaper to sand the epoxy putty to a smooth finish.

While you have the 120-grit sandpaper out, go over the bench once again so that it is ready for painting. Wipe clean to remove all traces of dust.

Place the bench on a drop cloth to protect flooring from overspray. We popped ours onto bricks to make it easier to spray the legs.

If you have previously battled with spray paint that drips and runs, or requires 4 to 5 coats to get the finish you want - you're in for a surprise! The unique formulation of Rust-Oleum is what makes this product so fantastic.

More paint and less solvent

The spray paint goes on easily when applied properly and you only require 2 light, even coats to cover most projects.
