Colourful plant pot birdhouses
Rust-Oleum supplied me with a selection of new products and 2X spray colours to try out. I decided to make some colourful plant pot bird houses for the garden. This is a busy corner and I'm sure the local wildlife will appreciate the new housing development!
Rust-Oleum recently added three new trendy colours to their 2X spray paint range. These new colours are Satin Magenta, Gloss Coral and Gloss Ocean Mist. You can find the full range of Rust-Oleum 2X colours at your local Builders Warehouse.
YOU WILL NEED:
Plastic plant pots, 3
Rust-Oleum 2X spray paint in your choice of colours
Rust-Oleum 2 X primer*
Plywood or pine offcut
8mm dowels, 3
Newspaper or drop cloth
TOOLS:
Drill / Driver plus assorted bits
38mm spade bit or hole saw
Jigsaw
Tape measure and pencil
Buy all your supplies at your local Builders Warehouse.
HERE'S HOW:
1. Spray all the pots with a primer coat. This isn't absolutely necessary but will provide a longer lasting paint finish.
2. Shake the can well and then spray all the pots with a light even coat of colour. If you need to apply a second coat, let the first coat dry thoroughly before you do.
3. Place a pot on the plywood or pine and use to draw circles for the front section .
4. When cutting out the circles with a jigsaw, bear in mind that these need to be slightly smaller than the drawn circle, so that they fit inside the pots.
5. Drill a hole in each front section. You can use a 38mm spade bit or hole saw to do this. Firmly clamp each piece to your workbench and have a scrap piece of wood underneath.
To add some colour to the front pieces for each bird house I used Rust-Oleum Ultimate Wood Stain. The antique range of colours includes Rustic Sage, Worn Navy, Vintage Aqua, Beached Blue and Antique White, plus a range of vibrant stain tints. These wood stains are super easy to apply and provide a beautiful colour to wood.
6. Shake the can and then use a paintbrush to apply the stain to the front sections
7. Use an 8mm drill bit and dowel to add a small perch to each front section. Push this firmly in place
Now you are ready to mount the bird houses outdoors.
GOOD TO KNOW: If your front section does not stay firmly in place, use a bit of double-sided tape or Prestik to hold.
