South African just can't resist the lure of the outdoors, whether it's packing up the car and heading out for a picnic, or setting up outdoors for entertainment at home.
Another reason outdoors is great, and especially with load shedding back on the cards, is that you can do all your cooking on the braai or gas grill and set up a space to sit and relax or dine with family and friends. With this in mind, we give you some great tips on getting your outdoor space ready for summer.

Set Out an Entertainment Area
While the kitchen is the heart of the home, an entertainment area is the place to be during the spring and summer seasons. Having a deck, patio or paved space for seating and dining is always a worthwhile investment, and one that you can enjoy all year round.

- Decking out with style
Installing a deck is a DIY project that anyone with basic DIY skills and the right tools can tackle. There are plenty of timber merchants that offer a variety of wood planks that only have to be cut down to length, and you will find all the supplies you need to make your own deck at Builders.

- Pour a slab
A poured concrete slab has to be one of the most affordable and easy projects to do if you need to set up an outdoor entertainment area, apart from gravel that is. Once you have measured out and framed the area with cheap plywood. All that's left is to add rebar and wire and pour on the concrete.

- Pave the area
Easier than pouring a concrete slab but not as cheap is buying concrete pavers to set out an entertainment area, you can buy the concrete pavers at Builders and they have to be the cheapest ones I have come across. Clean out the area, put down gravel and sand, and top off with concrete pavers - as easy as that!

Kit Out your Outdoor Kitchen
With the flooring sorted for the entertainment area, now you need a place to fire up the braai. Whether you opt for a freestanding braai, a portable gas grill, or a full-on fitted kitchen, summer is all about great food. Make sure you have a place where you can prepare the food (unless the kitchen is close by) and storage for all your braaing essentials.
Don't be put off by some of the amazing outdoor kitchens out there and how difficult they look, it's easy enough to draw up a basic plan and decide whether to build with brick or make everything with wood. Once the storage and cabinets are assembled, top it off with the perfect countertop.
