How to make a storage base for a bed
Home-Dzine reader, Roline, shares a project that her boyfriend tackled when their mattress needed a base...
When my boyfriend and I moved in together recently, we needed a better, bigger, comfier bed than our old double one. My boyfriend had a brand new king size mattress, but we didn't have a base. Ideally we wanted a base with storage underneath for our extra linen, so he decided to design a base that would suit our needs.
The problem was that our new place was built in such a way that anything bigger than a double bed base could not fit up the stairs, so we had to create a base that was not solid, and had to be taken up in bits and pieces.
My boyfriend designed the bed base, worked out measurements, had the wood cut to size and constructed two single bed bases that could easily be carried up the stairs. The bed design consists of an iron frame that supports the panels for the mattress.
Janice: You don't need to go to the trouble of making an iron frame - you can use pine or board to make the entire mattress support.
Two pieces of BisonBord are placed horizontally on the frame, and these support the mattress. For added storage, two drawers were made to slide under the frame design. Each fitted with wheels and handles for easy access.
Every night I feel like the princess from the story Princess and the Pea, not only because the bed is higher off the ground than usual, but because I sleep like royalty on my personally-designed bed!
I am sure you will agree that this is a novel bed design that overcomes a design problem.
