Simple desk for boy or girl
I discovered this simple desk design . It consists of two open shelf units and a top and sells for around R2500. To make this desk you would only need one sheet of 16mm SupaWood that you can have cut to size at your local Builders Warehouse and a few supplies for a total cost of around R850.

YOU WILL NEED:
4 of 400 x 600mm 16mm SupaWood - pedestal top / bottom
4 of 600 x 720mm 16mm SupaWood - pedestal sides
3 of 368 x 600mm 16mm SupaWood - pedestal shelf
1 of 600 x 1400mm 16mm SupaWood - desktop
4 x 50mm cut screws
4 x 30mm cut screws
Plastic screw caps
Wood filler
TOOLS:
Drill / Driver + assorted bits
Countersink bit
Orbital sander + 120- and 180-grit sanding pads
Tape measure and pencil
HERE'S HOW:
1. Having all the boards cut to size means that all you have to do is assemble the sections. Drill 3mm pilot holes through the top and bottom sections 50mm in from the front and back and be 8mm from the side edges. Countersink the drilled holes.
2. Drill 3mm pilot holes on the top and bottom edge of the sides, also 50mm in from the front and back edge and 8mm in. The pilot holes in the sides should match the pilot holes drilled in the top and bottom.
3. To add the shelves measure up from the bottom and mark the position where you want the shelves to be mounted. Mark on the inside and outside of the sides. From the mark, measure up 8mm (half that of the 16mm board). Drill a 3mm pilot hole through the sides that is 50mm in from the front and back of the sides. Countersink the pilot holes. Also drill 3mm pilot holes in the shelf sides - 50mm in from the front and back edges.
4. All the screw holes can be filled with wood filler, or topped off with plastic screw caps.
5. Secure the desktop in place by screwing through the top of the side sections using 4 x 30mm cut screws.
