How to make these plywood chairs

Here's a chair you can make using 12mm plywood and cable ties for a contemporary chair that is strong and unique. You won't find chairs like these in the stores but they are definitely a conversation piece. Feel free to do some experimenting with the design of the chair and share your results.

Designed by homemade modern, these chairs would look great as an accent piece, on a modern deck, or in your home office.

YOU WILL NEED:

Sheet of 12mm pine or birch plywood - use marine plywood for using outdoors
2 Packs of cable ties - white or black
Drill/Driver and assorted bits
Jigsaw or circular saw
Cutting pliers and long-nose pliers
Craft knife

HERE'S HOW:

Have the board cut in two at your local Builders Warehouse. One section should be 406mm wide, and the other 300mm wide.

1. Measure and mark the two sections of board as shown above. Use a jigsaw or circular saw to cut out the marked sections. Sand all the cut edges with 220-grit sandpaper.

2. Measure and mark a line 12mm in from the edges and make an 'X' every 20mm. These will be for drilling the holes for cable ties.

3. Use a 5mm wood bit to drill holes at the 'X' marks. I clamped 2 to 3 boards together to drill the holes on multiple pieces at the same time.

4. Put a series of loops into the drilled holes in the first piece and then string cable ties through the holes in the second piece and the cable loops in the first piece. This creates a cable tie to cable tie connection. Keep the links loose for now.

5. Shaping and tightening the cable ties is an incremental process that requires a bit of patience. The good news is that you can always cut and redo cable ties if you make a mistake. Use long nose pliers to tighten the ties and cutting pliers to cut the long ends.

6. To add supports cut some scrap plywood into supports and tie them to both the leg and back pieces of the chair.
