New uses for old furniture

Using an old piece of furniture as a starting point for a new project is a great way to transform something unusable into something functional and creative.

Transform a baby changing table into a bar cart. Even if your table is different in design, look at the ways you can make a few changes to create a useful piece of furniture.

YOU WILL NEED:

Galvanized or plastic bucket
Jigsaw with fret saw blade (thinner than a standard blade)
Drill/driver with screwdriver and drill bits
Stainless steel racks
Clear printer sticker paper
Corrugated plastic
Straightedge
Crafts knife
Screws
Finishing washers

HERE'S HOW:

1. Mark a circle on the top shelf about 20mm smaller than the top rim of the bucket. Use a jigsaw to cut the hole for the bucket. You will need to use a large drill bit (10mm) to make a hole to insert the jigsaw blade. When cutting a circle inside a piece of board, operate the jigsaw at a fairly high speed but move slowly around the drawn line.

2. Use 180-grit sandpaper to sand the edges of the hole. Then drop the bucket into the hole (and use it to hold ice).

3. Drill pilot holes, then mount the metal can dispensers, stemware holders, and dishware racks as needed.

4. Laser-print copyright-free images onto the sticker paper. Attach them to sections of corrugated plastic cut to size with the straightedge and crafts knife. Screw the plastic sections to the outside of the shelves using finishing washers.
