Basic wood cubes make stunning modular storage units

Over the years I have often extolled the uses for a basic cube, whether you add a shelf, a couple of drawers, or a door, you can make basic cubes out laminated pine, meranti or your choice of hardwood. I saw these modular storage units on a home shopping site in the Netherlands. So simple to make yet stunning when put together.

The design of each cube is very simple as you can see below. The cubes can be assembled using either dowels or biscuits and wood glue, so that no screws are visible on the inside or exterior.

Pine or meranti would be the most affordable woods to use for this project and you will find these readily available at most timber merchants. Stain the wood with Woodoc gel stain in lighter shades and finish off with Woodoc antique wax to achieve a look similar to that of the storage units shown here.

For a shelf unit use Pattex No More Nails adhesive to secure the shelves in place. Concealed or Euro hinges on doors allow for easy opening and closing without any hardware being visible. And you will find step-by-step instructions here for any easy method for mounting drawer runners.

These storage cubes are mounted onto the wall using brackets mounted on the inside at the top corners. For a more aesthetically pleasing finish I would create a recess at the back of each unit and use a French Cleat method for mounting onto the wall.
