Install shelves above garage door
Most garages are built to fit one or two cars and leave little space for storage. One space that is under utilised and perfect for adding storage is above a garage door. This project shows how you can install a single shelf - or two shelves if you have a double door - in the space above the door.
Measure up the area to determine the length and width of the frame required. You don't want to go any wider than 500mm, and this width should be more than sufficient for storage bins or containers.
To make the frame you can buy lengths of 50 x 100mm PAR pine at your local Builders Warehouse, which will make a sturdy frame. Join the side and centre supports to the front and back (long lengths) by drilling through the front/back into the supports.
Just to make sure the shelves are securely supported, eye hooks are secured to ceiling beams and front corners of the frame.
A length of chain is attached using S-hooks and a turnbuckle added to tighten the chain to the correct distance.
Top off the frame with a cut piece of plywood or chipboard to create a platform for adding your storage boxes or bins, or any other items you want to store out of the way.
Plastic bins are great for storing smaller items or seasonal stuff that you don't use everyday, and they keep stored items dust-free and dry.
