Angle grinders have been used on job sites for decades and they have acquired a dangerous reputation during this time, most of which can be blamed on operator ignorance or stupidity. As with any power tool, the onus is on the user to follow safety guidelines to prevent avoidable accidents from occurring. One thing I always told my kids when they were growing up was that 'stupid buggers always get hurt!' and this is so true no matter what power tool you are using.
Below is a list of safety guidelines to keep in mind when using an angle grinder - or any power tool for that matter, to protect yourself and others from harm.

Safety Guidelines to keep in mind when using an Angle Grinder
1. Understand the tool before you use it
Anyone using a power tool for the first time should acquaint themselves with the tool. Nowadays it is easy to go online to find videos and tutorials as well as helpful tips for any power tool out there. Reading through the instruction manual is also a good idea as it provides information on what the tool should and should not be used for.
2. Do not plug in the tool
Before using the tool, know how to assemble any components that the tool requires, in the case of an angle grinder you will normally have to attach the handle and safety guard. These are essential components and the tool should not be used without either, particularly the safety guard as this protects your body from harm from flying debris. The handle ensures that you hold the tool at the correct angle when performing the task and allows you to have a firm grip.
Another reason to not plug in the tool is to install any accessories such as polishing or cutting discs. Replacing accessories or attachments should be done with the tool unplugged to prevent accidents.
Acquaint yourself with the on and off switch on the angle grinder as you never know when you may need to switch off the tool in an emergency.
3. Wear the proper safety gear
When using any power tool safety gear is a must. Safety glasses or a clear shield protect your face and eyes from flying debris. Wear thick safety gloves when performing tasks with an angle grinder, and sound-blocking headphones or earplugs will reduce the harmful noise level. Clothing should also not be loose or have ends that can become tangled as you work and long hair should be tied up and out of the way.
4. Use the tool according to specified guidelines
As mentioned previously, the angle grinder is considered one of the more dangerous power tools due to its speed and power. One small slip caused by inattention or improper use can result in bodily harm. Take note of the following:
- Do not remove the safety guard for any reason. Too many accidents happen as a result of the safety guard being removed. Most angle grinders allow the safety guard to be adjusted for comfort and safety and also to prevent the safety guard from blocking sight lines.
- Only use the correct disc for the required task and replace worn-down discs immediately. Using the incorrect disc can result in this shattering or can cause an angle grinder to 'kick back'.
- Always check that the electrical cord is out of the way and that there is no damage to the cord before using the tool.
- Unplug the power tool before changing accessories or attachments.
By following the above safety guidelines and using an angle grinder within its performance parameters, accidents can be prevented.
