Whatever project you are undertaking, whether you are sanding down, cutting to size, or putting together, you should wear the correct safety gear as a matter of routine. DIY is all about enjoying the job at hand but these safety precautions aren’t recommendations - they are absolute musts whenever you’re using power tools.
In this guide we offer advice on the level of safety you need to accomplish any DIY task in and around the home.
Painting or Decorating
Even smaller jobs of painting and decorating around the home require that you wear a level of protective clothing and gear to keep you from harm. While some tasks may only necessitate the use of safety glasses, there will be times when you need to don gloves and a dust mask.
GOOD TO KNOW: Always wear a dust mask when painting or using spray paint.
Cutting, Ripping or Sawing
It is important to wear safety gloves when sawing, cutting or ripping timber and board, particularly when working with saws with round, circulating blades or cutting saws with rotating elements like circular saws.
Safety first when drilling
Protect yourself from bodily harm with undertaking any task that involves using a drill. That includes wearing safety glasses and ear protection, especially when using an impact or hammer drill.
Using sanding tools
Donning a dust mask is particularly important when performing any sanding tasks. The fine particles produced by sanding tools can cause harm if used for extended periods.
Safety with other tools
Wear protective gear and clothing when using other tools like planers and routers and protect your eyes with protective glasses or goggles..
Invest in comfortable safety gear that you need before you start your project and you will enjoy DIY so much more knowing you are safe from harm.
