Dress up a blank wall

Do you have a wall in your home that screams for attention. Most rooms have a wall that could do with a little bit of dressing up and there are so many ways to add a bit of detail to plain walls. Take a look below at some easy ways to add interest or create impact on a boring wall.

 

Here's a new take on displaying your favourite collectibles. Make a simple shadow box frame using PAR pine that you can buy at your local Builders Warehouse. Buy a small piece of 3mm masonite backing board as well. Cut the backing board to the size that you want your shadow boxes to be and then use Alcolin or Bostik spray adhesive to attach fabric or wrapping paper to the front of the board.

Cut the PAR pine to create a simple frame that will fit around the backing board. You can cut the corners with a mitre saw for a 45-degree angle, or simply butt them together. It's easier to paint the frames before attaching them to the backing with steel braces at the back.

Subway art is an inexpensive and fun way to create your own instant work of art. Reclaimed timber is a popular choice for subway art, but you could always stock up on a few pieces of PAR pine and make your new art look vintage. Or use Rust-Oleum chalkboard spray for the background and you can change your art as and when you please.

Use old picture frames and paint them in a single colour, or mix it up with bold colours. Use Rust-Oleum 2X spray paint for an easy option for adding colour to old picture frames.

A simple collection of framed photos, pictures or your own made art are perfect for filling a blank wall. You can mix it up with frames in different colours or have frames and mats in a single colour (shown above).

Why is it, sometimes you see a room and it takes your breath away, when other times, perfectly lovely rooms fall flat? What makes a room exciting, interesting, and WOW worthy? Is it an element of surprise, contrasting elements, exciting colour, trendy fabrics, or dramatic lighting?

Any of these things, and many others could transition a room from dull to dramatic. Don't think it has to be an in-your-face element. It could be just a small subtle detail that elevates the room, or a large statement piece that's attention grabbing. If you think your room doesn't have that wow factor, look around and see what you can tweak into terrific. Maybe instead of redecorating the entire room, it may only need some simple, but interesting elements to send it over-the-top.
