Colour transforms any space. Dark wood furniture would normally make a room feel closed in and dour, but add colour and you have a cheerful atmosphere that is bright and modern.

Don't be afraid to experiment with fabric and paint to add doses of bold colour. Start with one or the other and then take scraps of fabric or paint swatches with you when choosing more fabrics or colours to complete the look.

Almost any piece of furniture can be painted and you can choose to use acrylic paints, chalk paints or Rust-Oleum spray paints. A new trend in updating furniture is to cover it in colourful printed fabrics. If you want to cover an accent piece in fabric all you need is some gorgeous fabric, a container of ModPodge or clear acrylic sealer and a paintbrush. And don't worry about destroying the piece. If you want to remove the fabric later on just dab on some Plascon RemovALL to strip the sealer and peel off the fabric!

Introduce small pops of bold accent colour with painted side tables, or spray painting vases and lamp bases. Choose your colours from pieces or hues already in the room. And don't forget how easy it is to paint a plain rug, or even make your own patterned rug using matt or satin paints.

When using decor accessories to add colour to any room - you can add as little or as much as you like, but try to avoid overdoing it. Choose no more than three accent colours if you don't want a room to look overdone and out of balance.
