Add a picture wall to a room

Adding a picture wall to a room is a lovely way to introduce a focal point and have all your family photographs on display.

It's not difficulty - if you have the right tools and take the time to prepare everything in advance.

Straight and level
When setting out an arrangement of art or photographs, it is essential that you get everything straight and level. For this you can use a Cross & Line Laser Level, or a long straightedge and a spirit level.

  • Start by determining the height of the bottom row - allowing for seating that may be under the display - and mark a straight pencil line across the wall. You will follow this line to arrange the bottom row of pictures. Draw up upright line at each side, also use a laser level or straightedge and spirit level.
  • As you move up a row, check to ensure that you remain straight and level.
  • Cut out templates from newspaper to the size of the art and use sellotape to affix these to the wall to determine your layout.
  • If all your frames are exactly the same, you can mark each template to show where the picture hanger is on the back of the frame. This mark will allow you to hammer in a picture hook at the right spot.
  • If your frames are different sizes, mark each template accordingly to show where the hanger is.
