Welcome guests into your home

With just a few clever decorating tricks you can create an entrance that welcomes guests and looks stunning. Let's start with a bare canvas by removing all the furniture and see where it takes us...

Step 1
Paint is an affordable and powerful tool for transforming any space in a home. Depending on the size of the space and the look you are going for, start off with a single colour.

Step 2
For this project we selected a muted caramel for the walls that brings out the warmth in the laminate flooring. Using the Plascon Inspired Colour System, choose a single colour - Cafe Beige and then click on all colour schemes to see the colour options recommended. For walls where a hard-wearing, luxurious finish is required, use Plascon Double Velvet.

The doors were painted in Red Wine with Plascon Enamel Doors and Trims. Use this superior-quality enamel paint for interior and exterior surfaces that take a lot of knocks and require durable protection.

Working according to the 60-30-10 colour principle, dark colour was added to trim. Pop into your local Builders Warehouse to have your paint products tinted in the colours you like.

Step 3
Now we are ready to start adding a few details. Whether you home has existing architectural details or not, adding a few extra pieces of moulding here and there can really make a difference. A picture rail breaks up a large expanse of bare wall, adding interest, while the staircase becomes a feature with its painted risers and bannister.

Step 4
Accessories fill up the empty space with character and personality. Depending upon the available space, which not many have in an entrance, the first priority is to add a small (or large) console table. With even a small console table you can create an interesting vignette or arrangement that catches the eye. A mirror mounted above the table will reflect light around the space.

Lighting is important in an entrance or hallway, and this is one area where you should splurge on lighting that is not only practical, but good looking too. One way to instantly make guests feel at home is to add a small rug. This element not only adds comfort factor, it makes the transition from outdoor to indoors even more welcoming.
