Industrial style table lamp
You may remember earlier this year we posted an industrial lamp made by one of our DIY Divas. We can now show you step-by-step how to make your own industrial lamp using galvanised pipe and fittings. You will find galvanised pipe and fittings at most steel suppliers and lamp fittings and electrical cord at your local Builders Warehouse.
In this project we show you how to make this industrial table lamp using galvanised pipe and components.
YOU WILL NEED:
A. 6 of ½" 90-degree elbows
B. 4 of ½" tees
C. 1 of ¾" FPT to 1" FPT coupling - referred to as ¾" to 1" coupling
D. 1 of ½" FPT to ¾" MPT coupling - referred to as ½" to ¾ coupling
E. 1 of ½" strain relief fitting
F. 6 of ½" x 3" black pipe nipples
G. 1 of ½" x 6" black pipe nipple
H. 2 of ½" close nipples
J. 1 of ½" x 10" black pipe nipple
Lamp housing and flex cord
Incandescent globe, or substitute with CFL globe
FPT = female connection / MPT = male connection
HERE'S HOW:
1. Thread two ½ x 3" nipples into a tee. Thread two elbows onto the exposed end of the ½ x 3" nipples. Repeat for the other leg of the lamp.
2. Screw two ½ x 3" nipples into a tee for the middle bar. Thread the middle section into the legs created above.
3. Thread a close nipple into the bottom of a tee and then thread a strain relief fitting into the back of the tee.
4. Thread the ½ x 10" nipple into the top of the tee. Thread the lamp wire through the strain relief fitting and up the neck of the 10" nipple.
5. Add an elbow and the ½ x 6" nipple to the top of the assembly.
6. Thread another elbow onto the end of the ½ x 6" nipple. Pass the lamp wire through.
7. Thread a close nipple into the ¾ to 1" coupling, and fit the rubber bushing (white) and threaded rod (silver) from the lamp kit to the inside of the coupling. Now thread the ¾ to 1" coupling to the ½ to ¾ coupling.
8. Pass the wire through the assembly created above and thread it into the elbow. Thread the socket base onto the threaded rod in the assembly.
9. Connect the lamp wires to the socket. Fit the socket into the socket base. Screw in the light bulb, tighten the strain relief fitting on the back of the lamp and switch on your new industrial pipe lamp!
