Knit a cable bed throw or blanket

Winter might be over, but that gives you plenty of time to get started on this cabled bed throw by Ideas Magazine. As one of my fave mags, I just had to share this project with you.

Reader Therese Rabe from Onrus designed and knitted this super chunky blanket in panels, which she then sewed together.

[1] S3B is: slip one st to a cable needle and hold in back

[2] S3F is: slip one st to a cable needle and hold in front

[3] S5R is: slip 3 sts onto a cable needle and leave at back of work. Knit next 2 sts, p the 1st from cable needle then k 2 sts from cable needle

Before you begin
Read the instructions carefully and on a separate piece of paper jot down the rows for the diamond pattern and the rope cable pattern. Tick off every row as you complete it, so you don’t get confused every time you stop and resume your knitting.

To make
Main cable panels
(make three alike)
Using 15mm Ns and three strands of yarn, c/on 41 sts.

1st row (RS): p4, k6 (these sts are for rope cable panel), p4, work the 1st row of diamond patt over the next 13 sts, p4, k6 (these 6 sts are for rope cable panel), p4.
2nd row:
k4, p6, k4, work the 2nd row of diamond patt over the next 13 sts, k4, p6, k4.
These 2 rows set the sts for the side edges and the diamond panel.
Cont as set until the 8th row has been completed.
9th row:
p4, C6B, p4, work the 9th row of diamond patt over the next 13 sts, p4, C6F, p4.
Cont patt as set from the 10th row of diamond patt, at the same time work the rope cable over the 6 cable sts on every foll 8th row.
Cont in this way until you have worked 7 full diamond reps for the queen size and 8 full reps for the king size. Your work should measure 210cm for the queen size and 240cm for the king size from the c/on edge.
C/off in patt.

Inner panels (make two alike)
Using 15mm Ns and three strands of yarn, c/on 15 sts.
Starting with a k row, work in st until the panel measures the same length as the main cable panel, ending with a WS row. NOTE It may be easier to join the panels together as you work in order to obtain the correct length. Refer to the sewing up details in the ‘to complete‘ paragraph.
C/off.

Side panels (make two alike)
Using 15mm Ns and three strands of yarn, c/on 10 sts.
Starting with a k row, work in st until the panel measures the same length as the main cable panel, ending with a WS row.
C/off.

To complete
Darn in all the loose ends at the back of the work. Do not press otherwise you will flatten the cable stitch patterns. Place the cable panels on a flat surface with the RS uppermost and position the two inner panels on either side of the centre panel. Using one strand of yarn and working in mattress stitch, join the inner panels to either side of the centre panel. Now join the cable panels to the inner panels accordingly. Position the two side panels along the side edge of the first and last cable panel and, using a mattress stitch as before and one strand of yarn, sew the panels in place.
