Make your own concrete spheres

Here's how to make your own concrete spheres to use as interior decor accessories, or for outdoor in the garden. The spheres are made using bargain-buy inexpensive circular glass lamp fittings that you will find at your local Builders Warehouse.

You will need thin glass, inexpensive lamp fittings for this project. The cheaper ones are the best as they are easier to break at the end of the project. You will find these lamp fittings in the lighting section at your local Builders Warehouse, or perhaps you already have a couple lying around at home.

Place the glass shades in a cardboard box and pack around them with newspaper or bubble wrap to keep them in an upright position. Mix one part cement with four parts of fine sand in a bucket. You only need to add enough water to make a pancake mix consistency, so add water slowly.

Use a garden trowel or scoop to pour the cement mixture into the globes. Tap the globes gently to release any air bubbles that might be trapped. But it doesn't matter if you leave a few - they add to the finished effect. Let this sit for at least 24 hours.

Pop on a pair of safety glasses and, one at a time, place the globes in a heavy duty garbage bag and use a hammer to break the glass globe. Tap gently and the glass will break right off inside the bag. If you hit it too hard you may break the concrete.

Once most of the glass is off, you can open the bag and gently break off any pieces that remain with the hammer. I used gloves to get mine out and a sanding block to lightly go over the whole piece to ensure all the little specks of glass were off.
