With their lacy leaves, Monstera Deliciosa is the perfect specimen for these delicate air dry clay bowls

Inspired by the large leaves of a Monstera Deliciosa, also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, these beautiful air dry clay bowls look fantastic when painted up and ready to hold your jewellery and accessories. They are super-easy to make and you only need a single pack of Jovi or Das air dry clay to make, and which you will find at your local Builders store or online suppliers.

Making these air dry clay bowls can be done over a warm weekend and are really simple to make with just a few supplies.

YOU WILL NEED:

Jovi or Das air dry clay

Hand drawn or printed stencil

Craft or utility knife

Rolling pin and board

Small rounded bowl

120-grit sandpaper

Paint to finish

HERE'S HOW:

Step 1

The first thing you need to do is to draw or print out the leaf template that you will use to make the bowl - or bowls if you want to make more than one bowl as we did.

Step 2

Break off a large piece of air dry clay and roll this out until it is about  3 to 4 mm thick and large enough for the stencil you have made.

Step 3

Place the leaf stencil over the rolled out clay. This will be the template for the shape you need to cut out, so make sure you do a good job making the shape.

Step 4

Use a sharp craft or utility knife to cut neatly around the stencil. Remove any clay that builds up on the blade so that you don't rip the edge of the clay or you will need to start again.

Step 5

This photo was omitted but you need to score leaf veins on the soft clay surface to replicate the real leaf.

Step 6

Gently lift the air dry clay and place over the bottom of a small rounded bowl. If you prefer a more curled effect, you can also place the clay inside the bowl.

Step 7

Put the bowl in a warm dry place. Don't place it in a sunny spot as the clay will dry out too quickly and could result in cracks. Leave the clay for about 48 hours or until dry.

Step 8

Use 120-grit sandpaper to smooth off around the edges and any other rough areas.

Step 9

Now you can paint with acrylic paint in your choice of colours. Using glossy paint is best as it also protects the finished bowl. After 2 to 3 coats of paint, allowing drying time between each coat. If you can't find glossy acrylic paint, apply 2 to 3 coats of ModPodge or clear acrylic sealer or polyurethane.

FINISHING

To finish off the decorative bowl, you can apply metallic paint around the edges of the leaf to give it a more detailed effect.

You can try this effect with other leaf designs to bring a touch of nature to your indoors.
