Having crafted several works that use mixed media, I must admit to being a fan of this art form. Mixed media lets you work with a variety of different mediums in many forms to create pieces that are most definitely unique and each one of a kind.
To offer more of an explanation as to what mixed media involves, you can use items to create a visual that can be painted over or given a light coat of plaster, over which you can apply more paint, glitter effects, accessories that tie in with the theme of your project, or whatever you like. There aren't any rules that come with mixed media... it's all about combining several mediums to create the whole.
Tatyana Chopina, Russian artist working with mixed media, uses a variety of accessories and paint techniques to craft her mixed media creations.
You can use the many components of mixed media to create interesting objects until you decide on the elements you prefer to combine for your unique pieces. To better explain the basics of crafting in mixed media, this article focuses on the work of Tatyana Chupina, a Russian mixed media artist whose work is seen as one of the most creative forms of crafting with mixed media. Most of the mixed media creations shown below use items that you may already have in your home, items that can be found, cardboard cut-outs printed from the web and assorted fabrics, embellishments and accessories.
Look closely at the mixed media box creation above and you will see many everyday and interesting items on this mixed media project. The overall effect was to apply a grey rust effect using paste and paint for a look of an antique piece.
Tatyana loves to create items that have a layered or 3-dimensional effect, like the mixed media box that brings much more height and depth into the piece with the addition of a frame around the box to lower and lift the mixed media composition.
This beautiful mixed media piece in black and white is a beautiful example of how a plain box can be transformed into a piece with charm and sophistication. Old buttons, pieces of lace, plastic flowers, and even an old drawer knob. When Tatyana cannot find a piece that she needs for a composition she uses clay and cardboard to craft herself.
You can use mixed media for endless creative ideas, such as these beautiful Christmas baubles. Start your own family tradition by adding media that personifies your family as a whole, or where each bauble has a personal effect from each individual in the family.
