Quick Project: 10-Minute Cellphone Stand

This quick project shows how to make a cellphone stand that you can keep for yourself or give as a gift.

All you need to make this cellphone stand are two blocks of scrap wood or offcuts.  One block of 44 x 44mm x 100mm length for the top section, and one block 19 x 67 x 140mm length for the base. You will also need some wood stain and Spraymate metallic spray paint for finishing the cellphone stand.

1. To cut the slot in the top to hold a cellphone you need to insert a dovetail bit into your router. Although I'm using my router in a router table set-up, you can do the same with a plunge router - it's just a bit more tricky since you have to clamp securely to your bench or worktop.

2. You will also use a router and round-over bit to add a decorative edge to the bottom section of the cellphone stand.

3. Once all the detail has been added, sand smooth with 180-grit sandpaper and mask off the top section with masking tape.

4. I used Woodoc Gel Stain, cherrywood to stain the top section of the block. This will give a nice contrast once the metallic gold spray paint has been applied.

5. The masking tape was removed and re-applied to cover the stained section in order to spray with Spraymate metallic gold spray paint. Love this product! It's inexpensive when compared to other spray paints and works just as well for small projects.
