With all the worries in the world right now, it’s easy to spend the night tossing and turning as we battle to fall asleep, only to feel exhausted in the morning.

Having a pre-bedtime routine that helps you wind down before you turn in is a smart way to make sure you achieve restorative sleep. Our bedrooms should be havens of calm where we can switch off and relax, but too often we invite phones, TVs and laptops into the space, all of which are designed to stimulate the brain.

Turn your room into a Zen zone

When you make an extra effort to create a bedroom that is sleep-friendly, your brain comes to realise that this is a blissfully calm haven - free of tech, television and work stress. Don't have anything in the bedroom that has an LED light source as this type of lighting has been shown to affect sleep patterns. Even if there is dim artificial light in the room, this encourages the body to stay alert by making the brain think it’s daylight and interferes with a good night’s rest. Sleep research studied at Harvard University has shown that too much light during the late evening and through the night is a main factor why many people don't get enough sleep, and insufficient sleep is linked to increased risk for depression, as well as diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

Invest in a good mattress

Did you know that, on average, adults spend a third of their lives asleep? That makes a mattress a top priority for your bedroom. It is important to purchase a mattress that allows you to rest comfortably while you’re asleep. With so many different mattress types to choose from, do research when choosing one that’s right for you.

Feeling restless and uncomfortable or waking up with muscle aches and pains are an indication that you need to replace your existing mattress. Like all things, mattresses have a certain lifespan - after around 10 years the materials it’s made from will start to break down, compromising its ability to support your body. A useful tip: Teljoy has a wide range of brand-new bed sets and quality mattresses available on monthly subscription which makes getting the perfect bed affordable and gives you the flexibility of either owning the bed after a predetermined period or returning it at any point if you no longer need it.

Dress your bed

There’s a reason that photos of beautiful bedrooms look so alluring on Pinterest and Instagram - it’s because care has been taken to style them in a certain way. Ditch the old duvet and mismatched pillow slips and make your bed a place you can’t wait to snuggle into at night. Dress the bed out with soft, plump pillows, a cosy blanked or luxurious quilt rolled at the end of the bed. An unmade bed and untidy room look uninviting, so resolve to tidy up your room and make your bed every day before leaving home.

Banish dust and clutter

A dusty bedroom can lead to breathing problems or health issues if there is bacteria or viruses in the air. Bedroom curtains and pelmets are prime dust and allergen traps, points out SweepSouth CEO Aisha Pandor.. Wipe down the pelmets, then use your vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment on a low setting to give your curtains a quick once over.

Did you know that research show that those sleeping in a cluttered bedroom find it harder to relax and fall asleep than those who have a tidy, more organised space and this is why Pandor recommends decluttering and keeping your bedroom as neat as possible. If you don’t have the time to achieve this, hire in help from SweepSouth to ensure that your space is clean, and the air is clear so that you are geared up for a great night’s sleep.

Stream in sleep

Clear your bedside table of tissue boxes and piles of unread books, and make way for items to promote calm. Invest in a Bluetooth speaker so that you can stream guided sleep meditations while you are lying in bed. Guided meditations are a brilliant aid in helping you to help you fall asleep, and comforting white noise apps can soothe you into dreamland.

Breathe in the calm

Fill your room with beautiful scents that calm the mind, either in the form or a candle or an aromatherapy oil burner. A blend of neroli and frankincense oils will have a relaxing effect, while a candle with a comforting scent like vanilla will soothe frazzled nerves. Or, keep a little bottle of rose oil on your bedside table as it is deeply calming and uplifting and it helps to dab a little onto pulse points to relax and breathe deeply.

By following these tips above, you can rest assured your bedroom is a space that is primed to help you have the correct amount of sleep, so that you can carry on with your life in a healthy way.
