With the growing popularity of online shopping, more and more online stores are popping up -  and I am not including those that ship from overseas or feature misleading adverts - and with stores such as takealot.com and soon-to-be amazon, we will have access to items previously only seen on overseas websites and blogs. One great advantage of this is the huge selection of organisational products that can be used in sorting through the mess of drawers, cupboards, and wardrobes. If your clothes and fashion accessories are a nightmare, here are a few tips to get them better organised and easier to sort through when you need to get dressed.

1. Drawer organisers

I will admit to being one of those that starts out organised but then end up with a mess on my hands. My problem is time management - I never seem to have enough time to stay organised. I have tried to keep my drawers sorted but always end up rushing around stuffing items in where they need to go. Over time, I have realised that the problem is that I don't have any organisational solution in place - a method of keeping everything organised - until I went shopping online and discovered that we do indeed have drawer organisers that would work perfectly and make my life a little easier.

Life keeps us very busy, and if you are out at work all day, any time you spend at home is valuable. Laundry is never fun but like everything else in life, if it were better organised it would be more straightforward and simple. Drawer organisation solutions do that and more. And if you are interested in purchasing drawer organisers, do an online search for these in South Africa and you will find plenty. BUT, make sure that you only buy from a reputable and recognised supplier.

While you are shopping online, be sure to keep in mind any other drawers in the home that need to be organised, for example, your makeup drawer, kitchen, or bathroom drawers, or perhaps even drawers in your home office.

2. Shelf organisers

Being a short person with short arms, shelves are the worst when it comes to finding clothes. I can never reach the back of the shelf and high shelves are out of the question without a step stool. However, for me, the solution was an easy one... Convert all the shelves to pullout drawers. Best idea ever! Another idea that came to mind at the time was to remove the shelves, add sides and mount them on drawer sliders so that they could easily be pulled out for access. Both would work great and would not require much work to do.

Another solution is to shop online for storage containers that are large enough to accommodate your clothes. Buy these sized to fit onto the shelf and these can then be pulled forward to give you easy access.

Removing shelves is the best solution and these can be replaced with any of the abovementioned solutions, or you can be on the lookout for a shelving system that can be fitted into the shelf-less cupboard to provide all the storage you need.

3. Hanging organisers

How do you fit new clothes into an already overfull space? Many would say it's easy if you do a clean-out to get rid of all your old clothes. But what if you don't have old clothes and wear everything in the closet? Then you need a better storage solution for all your hanging clothes. Having said that, finding extra space is not always possible so the next best thing is to look at what you have and how it can be modified.

With only minor modifications - removing any top shelf - you can increase the amount of hanging space in a closet and allow for fitting a pullout rail. Shorter-length clothes can be hung on the bottom rail and longer clothes on the top. A pull-handle lets you lower the clothes to remove and replace them.

Collapsible clothes hangers are a great invention and save a lot of space in a packed wardrobe. I use these for clothes that are easy-iron or clothes that I do not wear very often. This is an inexpensive storage solution that will free up space for those new clothes!

Remove the bottom shelf in a closet cupboard and fit a pullout trouser rack. I have two of these and they are great for organizing casual and formal pants.

Bottom line

All the organisation and storage solutions shown above are available in South Africa and most are relatively expensive. Plus, if you buy the fittings and do the project yourself, you will save a bundle on installation costs. Take a look at your built-in cupboards, wardrobe, or closet and try to visualise what can be changed or modified to give you more - better organised - space for clothes and accessories.
