We spend a large amount of time in our bedrooms and it doesn't take much before it starts to feel cluttered and claustrophobic to follow these tips to make your bedroom feel larger.

Your bedroom should be a serene and calm space where you can relax at the end of the day. What it should not be is a room filled with chaos and clutter; the last room you want to spend time in. In this article, we offer advice on getting rid of excess clutter and freeing up space in the room so that, not only does the room feel larger than it is but it also feels more like a bedroom should.
6 easy steps
First and foremost, most of the steps below won't cost you a cent and do not require any renovations. All you will need is a couple of hours of your time to transform your bedroom into a calm and relaxing space.
1. Less Is Always Best
Interior designers will always tell you that
less is best when adding finishing touches to a
room. Too much furniture, lots of clutter,
clothes left lying around, and so on, but it
doesn't have to be this way if you have enough
closet space or storage space. If there is just
too much stuff in the room it will feel cramped
and this is when less is best is the idea rule
to follow.
Put clothes where they belong and if there
isn't enough room for them in a wardrobe,
built-in cupboard or dedicated closet space
then that is an indication that these areas need
to be sorted out and better organised. Designate
a couple of hours for cleaning out and getting
rid of old or damaged clothes, shoes you no
longer wear or fashion accessories that are no
longer fashionable.
2. Freedom to move around
Too much furniture in a bedroom takes up valuable floor space and makes it difficult to move around freely. Excess furniture could also mean that you are hoarding stuff you don't need and it has nowhere else to go. If it isn't in use and takes up space sell it, donate it or put it into storage if it is something you cannot bear to part with but do not make it a permanent feature in your bedroom if it isn't needed.
3. Be savvy with storage solutions
Storage and organisation solutions can be a
lifesaver when trying to find extra space in a
bedroom overfilled with clutter. Cleaning out
drawers is the first step to creating more space
and using storage solutions to be better
organised will let you continue the process and
keep clutter out of sight.
When taking the time
to sort through your clothing and accessories,
storage solutions will be invaluable in creating
more space that you can use. It is easy to find
inexpensive and practical storage solutions
online or look around the home for items that
can be repurposed. Plastic tubs and containers
are ideal for this and, since they are out of
sight except to you, no one will notice.
If you need to select new furniture for a small bedroom,
look for practical pieces that offer storage. A
set of bedside cabinets as opposed to bedside
tables gives you much-needed storage at either
side of the bed leaving the tops neat and
clutter-free.
4. Use patterns minimally
Bringing brightly-patterned bed linen or accessories into a bedroom is great if the room has plenty of space but not so great in a bedroom that has minimal space to move around. Too many patterns in a bedroom can be overwhelming and create a sense of chaos in a cramped bedroom. Keep to plain linens and rather add interest with textures. Select artwork that is calm and soothing to the senses in muted hues that will add to the feeling of calm.
5. Keep colours neutral or light
A calm and soothing bedroom does not have to be a single colour but it is better to stick with a light or neutral colour palette. If the room feels bland, feel free to add a small dose of colour with accessories, keeping in mind the less is the best rule of thumb. When colours are dark, and this includes dark wood furniture, it makes the overall space feel smaller. Replacing this, painting or whitewashing dark furniture will immediately create the illusion of a larger space.
