Budget storage solutions for kid's rooms

As they grow children require ever-increasing storage space - a place to hang clothes, to store toys, storage for books, and eventually a space to do their homework.

Children require ever-increasing storage space. A place to hang clothes, to store toys, storage for books, and eventually a space to do their homework. And today's older kids need space for video games, PC or laptop, and perhaps even their own TV or hi-fi. Finding room for everything isn't easy and sometimes smart storage solutions are called for.

BASKETS

Small or large baskets are great for storage. Don't buy cheap though, as these tend to unravel quickly. Look for baskets that have a solid edge over the weave or attach a fabric band around the top to extend the life.

STORAGE CUBBIES

Affordable plastic bins come in a variety of sizes and colours and you can easily build a frame to fit around these as a practical storage solution for any children's bedroom.

WALL SHELVES

In a small bedroom it's important to make use of any and all available space. Don't let walls go to waste. You can easily mount wall shelves and provide storage space for smaller items.

COMPACT FURNITURE

While I'm not a fan of bunk beds, the above beds are constructed in such a way as to be built into the room. Each bed has a space for storage at one end, and the entire structure features a pullout bed for sleepovers.

Beds that feature a pullout or trundle bed are ideal space savers if your child has regular sleepovers. The pullout bed slips neatly under the bed when not in use.

BUILT IN SHELVES

In older homes you often find nooks and corners where shelves can be mounted. Because kids are kids, any type of shelving needs to be securely fitted to the wall to prevent accidents.

BOOKCASES & BOOKSHELVES

The space behind and above a bed normally goes to waste, other than fitting a headboard. This is the perfect spot for bookshelves and bookcases rather than taking up valuable floor space.

REPURPOSE FURNITURE

You never know what you might find at secondhand stores and online auctions. It's so easy to repurpose furniture is new ways to make it practical and useful for any room in a home, but particularly for a children's bedroom where extra storage is needed.
