The word Hygge is Danish and is pronounced Hooga. There is no word in the English language which means exactly the same as Hygge, but if we were to choose the nearest possible translation, we would use the term “cosiness”. However, cosiness doesn’t really cover the depth of meaning that Hygge implies.
Hygge was originally a Norwegian word and means something similar to “well-being”. In short, it means something along the lines of creating a comfortable, warm and welcoming atmosphere while enjoying all the good things life has to offer with good people around you.
The concept of Hygge has really come to the fore over the past few years, and actually it isn’t such an alien idea. Most people practice hygge naturally in the winter and don’t even realize it!
Whenever you snuggle in front of a toasty
fire with your friends and family, invite your
loved ones over for dinner, wrap up in warm
clothing to walk your dog and then stop off to
enjoy a luxurious hot drink, the thing you’re
experiencing is Hygge.
When referring to
Hygge in the home, the living room tends to be
the focus. Yet the bedroom is just as important
particularly because we spend half our lives in
there. With that in mind, here are our tips for
bringing more Hygge to your bedroom.
Get The Décor Right
Often, if you’re redecorating your home, you leave your bedroom till the end since no guests will usually see it. However, the beauty of your bedroom has an enormous impact on the way you think and feel, so give your space all the attention that it deserves.
Keep Your Bedroom Tidy
Clutter is something that doesn’t help to bring a feeling of hygge to your bedroom. It causes stress and anxiety and is the exact opposite of hygge which makes you feel cosy and relaxed. Keep “stuff” to a minimum in your bedroom and only choose accessories which make you feel happy and soothed, Make sure to make your bed every morning too!
Choose Neutral Colors
Neutral colors work well with hygge in the bedroom since they aren’t too overwhelming. The colors you select must create a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere since bright shades often prevent relaxation.
Texture
If you’re imagining cosiness, snuggly, soft textures are important. Chunky knit cushions and blankets, fur throws and deep pile rugs are all good ways to soften your bedroom. Layer fabrics and mix textures in your bedroom for even more hygge.
Think of Your Comfort
Making your bed a relaxing and comfortable oasis couldn’t be more important choose the right mattress combination for both you and for your partner and pile lots of pillows and cushions onto the bed to add even more cosiness.
Lighting Is Key
Getting the lighting in your bedroom right is important to creating the right cosy atmosphere. Fairy lights are the perfect choice for hygge in your bedroom, adding an additional layer to the room’s ambient lighting and adding softness which is just perfect for your bedroom. Candles are a brilliant way to add light to your bedroom in a soft, warm and welcoming way. A flickering flame will really put you at your ease and make you feel cosy and relaxed every night.
Enjoying Your Space
An important element of hygge in the bedroom involves enjoying the space which you’re occupying. You should find the best way for you to turn your bedroom into a sanctuary where you can take a much needed refuge from everyday struggles, worries and stresses. Fill up your bedroom with all the items that enable you to do this. Magazines, books, plants, art, pets and music – anything which helps you to enjoy and make the most of the small pleasures life has to offer will bring hygge easily into your space.
Follow these top tips, and you will have plenty of hygge in your bedroom. Once you’ve managed to do this in such an intimate space of your home, it’s time to bring hygge to the rest of your rooms. Before you know it, you’ll have the most comfortable and welcoming home that you’ve ever known! Enjoy snuggling up all winter long!
