We spend a lot of time in the bedroom, so you want to make sure that it remains a place of calm and peace where you can relax at the end of every day. We found some great ways to give a bedroom a refreshing makeover that won't cost a fortune and that you can easily do in a day or over a weekend and these tips will go a long way in revitalizing a bedroom that feels stale.
1. Refresh Bed Linen
If you haven't got round to replacing bed linen for some time, and the bedding that you have is looking faded or tattered, it's time to look at replacing this. There are plenty of home decor and bedding stores that offer a selection of bed linens, ranging for affordable cotton-blends to more expensive Egyptian cotton - this lets you choose what you can afford or how much you want to spend on bedding.
Only recently did I treat myself to a set of Egyptian cotton bed sheets and duvet cover and I was pleasantly surprised at how luxurious it felt. Before that, my bedding was more from the inexpensive end of the range, being a bit of a scrooge when it comes to spending money. I would recommend spending a bit more on an increased thread count for cotton or Egyptian cotton bed linen if you want to spoil yourself and this bed linen also has a longer life.

2. Room with a View
The next tip for an affordable bedroom makeover is to add a new window treatment to the bedroom. Once again, many of us buy a set of curtains for a bedroom and only many years down the line do we realise how old, dated or faded the curtains or blinds become over time. I'm just as guilty as most everyone else, having had the same curtains in my bedroom for the past 4 or more years.
As with bedding, you can find a selection of affordable readymade curtains at most home decor stores, or you can buy your own fabric to make Roman blinds. Or combine the two for a pretty layered window treatment that offers privacy, blocks out sunlight or lets you sleep a little later in the mornings.

3. Pretty with Plants
Just like the other rooms in a home, the bedroom should have at least one plant or arrangement of fresh flowers to bring a touch of nature into the space. You can also use plants or flowers for a splash of colour in a monochromatic or single colour bedroom.
Plants breathe life into a room and you can choose a plant that best fits in with your lifestyle. There are many plant species that thrive on low-light, and others that require only occasional watering. If you're not sure of the best plant to buy for your bedroom, ask for advice at your local garden centre or nursery.
GOOD TO KNOW: Did you know that more plants die from overwatering than infrequent watering. I like to place a container under the base of the flower pot or planter and top this up on a regular basis. That way, the plant takes whatever water it needs and I don't have to panic about forgetting to water them regularly, especially when it's hot.

4. Comfort Underfoot
Whether you have tiled or laminate floors, adding a large rug or a couple of mats adds a level of comfort underfoot and makes you feel a bit more loved. And you can use rugs or mats to add texture, colour and pattern to a bedroom, which will instantly revitalize the room.

5. Perfect with Pictures
Art, posters and framed photographs add a finishing touch to any room and make the statement This is home’, and art is the perfect way to bring your own personality into every room in a home. What's just as important as adding art is the frame and an outdated frame can completely spoil the setting. If you have a dated gallery wall or a collection of favourite family photos, make sure to update the frames every so often. You don't need to buy new frames, repainting them will give them a new look.
6. Add some Style
Adding a headboard to the bedroom is the finishing touch - the cherry on top for any bedroom. It doesn't matter if the bedroom is decorated in country chic, traditional or contemporary, a bedroom is incomplete without the crowning glory of a headboard to make the bed a focal point or feature.
Nowadays, there are all types of options for making your own headboard, either using reclaimed wood or cheap chipboard and some pretty fabric. Or you can pop into a home decor store, shop online or browse around for the perfect headboard for your bed.
