Weekend bathroom makeover
If you need to give a dull, boring guest bathroom a makeover, here's how to do it yourself in a weekend - and on a tight budget. This small bathroom was given a weekend makeover for under R1000, and the end result was well worth it...!
The first step was to update the existing bathroom vanity. The original vanity was an ugly melamine disaster that made the bathroom look dated. The melamine doors, drawers and cabinet frames were lightly sanded with 180-grit sandpaper to de-gloss the melamine surface and provide the right finish for painting.
After wiping clean, Plascon Melamine Primer was applied with a paintbrush and a foam roller to smooth away the brush strokes. While a primer is not always necessary if you are using enamel paint, it is recommended when painting bathroom furniture, to aid in bonding the painted finishes to the surface of melamine.
Because of the confined space in this bathroom, using a primer and Plascon Kitchens & Bathrooms paint is easier than using a spray-on product. This is a quality water-based enamel paint for interior use and is formulated with silver technology that protects the paint film surface and inhibits the growth of micro-organisms - very important when painting in a bathroom.
Apply the paint using a paintbrush and foam roller. A paintbrush allows you to get into nooks, crannies and corners with ease, while a foam roller will smooth away any brush strokes.
What makes the biggest difference in this small bathroom is the addition of wall panelling on the main wall opposite the bathroom door. There are two projects on the Home-Dzine website: Easy wall panelling - Add wall panelling. Both articles show how easy it is to dress up a plain wall with detail.
Once you have measured off the wall and determined how many panels will fit, take the measurements along to you local Builders to have 9mm SupaWood cut to size. If your store doesn't stock 9mm PG Bison SupaWood, you can also get in contact with CitiWood or Board King, who will also cut to size for you.
Use No More Nails adhesive to mount the boards onto the wall and paint with Plascon Kitchens & Bathrooms paint using a paint brush and foam roller.
