How to install underfloor heating

Tired of having cold feet every morning? Install underfloor heating in your master bath for toasty toes and added value to your home.

Underfloor heating provides an even temperature distribution across flooring profiles by using radiant heat to ensure you feel comfortable. With conventional heating, the majority of heat is convected air, which rises, making the ceiling one of the warmest places in the room. The heat energy emitted from an underfloor heating system warms people and other objects in rooms rather than directly heating the air.

Underflooring heating kits can be installed under tiles, screed, cushion flooring and natural stone tiles, as well as under a concrete screed, laminate flooring, and under carpets.

HERE'S HOW:

1. Start by choosing the correct mat for the size of the room - mats should cover approximately 50-60% of the floor surface in order to provide uniform heat spread. Underfloor heating kits are supplied according to the square metre area. Measure off and make a basic drawing of the room. Take into consideration the closest power point, as heating mats are wired to start and end at the same point.

2. Make sure that your underfloor heating kit comes complete with a high quality thermostat. If you're investing in underfloor heating it makes sense to go for a model that offers computerised programming that takes care of switching on and off for you.

3. The floor needs to be thoroughly cleaned to removed all dust and dirt, and dried completely. If laying onto a concrete floor, apply a suitable primer before applying the heating mat.

4. If the room is irregular in shape you can cut the mesh and support strands to configure the mat to the appropriate shape.

TIP: You only need to lay the mat in areas where you will stand; heat will spread throughout the floor.

5. If a thermostat will be used to control the system, install the thermostat sensor wire to ensure it is embedded in the mortar, and ensure that wires from the start and end of the heating mat will easily reach the thermostat.

6. Cover the complete mat with a uniform layer of tile adhesive with a notched trowel and press the new tiles into position.
