GOOD TO KNOW: Normal installation of a towel rack or toilet roll holder will require drilling through ceramic tile. To avoid cracking or chipping tile, use a glass/tile bit or HSS bit. To keep the bit from slipping off the glossy surface, position masking tape in an x-shape over the area to be drilled. This stops the bit from sliding and allows it to grip better.
Installing a Towel Rack
-
Decide on towel rack placement. Place towel racks where towels can hang about two-thirds of their full length.
-
Use a spirit level to ensure that long rails are perfectly level, marking positions with a pencil. For strength, use nylon wall anchors with suitable sized screw.
- Use a glass/tile bit or HSS bit to drill through the tile and into the wall. If using a glass/tile bit you will need to change to an HSS or masonry bit once you have drilled through the tile. The hole should be approximately 10mm deeper than the length of the wall plug.
Installing a Soap Dish
-
For best results, look for the type of soap dish that installs right into a tiled wall. There are plenty of attractive options to suit every taste.
-
Remove sufficient tiles from the area to allow installation and apply tile adhesive.
-
Tape the dish in place with masking tape until the adhesive sets.
- Finish the edges with caulk or grout.
Installing a Toilet Roll Holder
- Check the positioning to ensure ease of use, following the instructions as for the Towel Rail.
