Design a beautiful bathroom - DIY style
Here's what I would like to do to makeover my bathroom, and most of these ideas are definitely do-able DIY projects.
I really do need to give my en-suite bathroom a makeover. The problem is that hubby likes it just the way it is, but after 20 years of living in the same house I'm tired and want something new. Here's what I would like to do to makeover the bathroom, and most of these ideas are definitely do-able DIY projects.
Love the idea of a bathroom vanity with a towel rail mounted onto the front. You might not be able to buy the brackets for holding the rails in place, but you can definitely make them. The bathroom vanity itself is a basic design with side and centre legs and two shelves.
This gorgeous range of bathroom furniture by minacciolo Italy is manufactured using 16mm MDF, which we would substitute with 16mm SupaWood. I specify SupaWood as the finish is far smoother than inferior products. It is perfectly smooth after painting. So, don't buy an inferior - and it's not even cheaper - product when you still have to spend time to make it smooth before painting.
Use a combination of PAR pine and SupaWood to make the bathroom vanity, and be sure to mount rubber washers onto the base of the legs to prevent moisture damage from a wet floor.
Batten and board or beadboard panelling has quite taken off yet in this country, but it does give a bathroom that unique cottage / shaker feel that finishes off the room. It's a reasonably simple project to make your own beadboard using SupaWood - if you are prepared to take the time and effort.
All the pieces and accessories that form part of this bathroom furniture range can be tackled as do-it-yourself projects. Make up your own matching laundry bin using 16mm SupaWood. Cut the corner pieces using a jigsaw to get the curvy shape.
This 3-shelf bathroom storage cabinet can be made in the same way as the laundry bin. The curvy corners are cut out of 16mm SupaWood with a jigsaw and the backing board can be finished with a beadboard design. Another alternative is to use pine tongue & groove panelling to create the backing for the cabinet.
Frame a rectangular mirror with a cut SupaWood frame to match the vanity and bathroom accessories. Practice makes perfect and the more you practice with a jigsaw - the more you will be able to do. Make your own bathroom shelves and brackets using Supawood. Making your own means that you can create your own unique accessories.
I have previously featured a project that shows how simple it can be to make your own bathroom vanity or bathroom storage cabinet. Top off your new vanity with granite, caesarstone, Surinno solid surfacing or Formica Lifeseal. The latter you can cut yourself, but for the others you will need to have the countertop cut to size and a hole cut out for mounting the basin.
Use a mitre saw to cut PAR pine legs to make this bathroom storage stool. Once again, make your own beadboard for the sides and add decorative details using a router or Dremel MultiTool.
When you think how much furniture costs these days - if you can even find what you are looking for - investing in tools is definitely the way to go. When looking at DIY projects you want to do, take a look at the price to buy new and what it would cost to make. Factor in the cost of a new power tool to add to your collection and you will soon see the worth of making your own.
With the rising cost of furniture in general, being able to make your own furniture is definitely an option to consider. For those who have never used power tools before, or who lack the confidence when using power tools, don't forget that DIY Divas offer a selection of workshops for girls AND guys that will help build up your confidence and provide you with plenty of tips, tricks and techniques.
