Is it time to get a safety bathtub?

These days, it’s quite likely that you have seen a commercial for safety bathtubs. You may even know someone who has one. But is it time for you to get one yourself?

Many people wait until there is a real need in the home before having a safety tub installed, such as an elderly parent moving in or someone in the household suffering a serious injury or illness. However, there are actually many great reasons to have safety tubs made of acrylic reinforced with fibreglass installed in your home, whether someone in the home as a particular special need or not.

Safety tubs dramatically cut down on the potential for bathroom accidents. Bathrooms are notoriously dangerous places that can be hotbeds for slips and falls, which can lead to serious injuries. Because you do not step up and over the edge of a safety tub the way you do with a traditional tub, but instead walking through a door, there is a much lower risk of falling. Also, because you can have your bath tub equipped with a bench seat inside, you won’t have to worry about slipping and falling on the wet tub floor while you are bathing or showering.

Many people put off getting a safety bath tub because they think that these tubs are all function and no form. That’s not true! There are many features that you can have in your tub that make bathing a truly luxurious experience at the same time as being safe. You can have Jacuzzi jets installed, for example, which can give your bath time a feeling of luxury that is also therapeutic. Spa showerheads can also be installed in these tubs to give a luxurious feeling, too.

The entire family can get a benefit out of using a safety tub – not just those with mobility issues such as as the disabled or elderly. Even small children can more safely bathe with a safety tub, because they don’t have to sit right down in the water or risk falling while taking a shower. They can safely get into the tub and sit on the bench and wash (with assistance from an adult, or on their own when they get older) without the risk of falling. This is easier on the adult, too, as they don’t have to bend over as far to help the child wash. (This would also come in handy when caring for an aging or injured family member who needs help with personal care).

If you’ve been thinking about getting a safety tub installed in your home but have been putting it off because you think you don’t need one, it’s a good time to reconsider. It’s never a bad time to up the ante on safety in your home, whether you have someone in your family who needs a safety tub today or not.
