Embellished drinks have a way of adding joy
and a sense of fun to what could be an ordinary
experience of an ingredient. Take for example
the martini. What was ordinarily a shot of
vodka, became one of the world’s most well-known
cocktails after the addition of its signature
ingredients, dry vermouth, green olives and
fresh lemon peel.
The history of some of
these refreshments is even more interesting. The
Margarita, a refreshing mixture of tequila,
triple sec and lime juice and another of the
world’s most popular cocktails has a disputed
origin story, shrouded in mystery and folklore.
Some sources claim the drink was invented by
Francisco "Pancho" Morales in the summer of 1942
after a lady came into an establishment and
requested a ‘magnolia’. Unable to remember the
recipe for the magnolia cocktail, the margarita
was created.
According to Radisson Blu
Hotel Waterfront, Chief Mixologist, Melrick
Harrison, “What is not disputed is that for a
margarita to be prepared correctly, premium
ingredients are required, such as freshly
squeezed lime juice over bottled, and the ratio
of tequila should be higher than the triple
sec.“
As the world acknowledges World
Margarita Day this week, many establishments
will be celebrating the occasion with their own
versions of the famous cocktail.
