There are an estimated 300 million smart homes in the world. With experts suggesting that the global home automation market will be worth an impressive $81.6 billion by 2023, there’s no question that technology is the future of how we live. However, when it comes to implementing such technology in our homes in 2023 and beyond, there are several must-haves worth considering. From tech upgrades that are eco-conscious to those that involve artificial intelligence, here are just a few home features that may very well be commonplace in the future.

The convenience of a home charger

Being a fantastic environmentally friendly alternative when compared to traditional gasoline powered vehicles, there’s no question that EVs will only continue to get more popular with time. As a result charging infrastructure will need to expand at a proportional rate, especially when considering that the number of EVs in the US alone are projected to rise from just under two million in 2020 to more than 26 million in 2030. While this highlights the likely presence of more chargers in public, however, it makes sense that home chargers have the potential to become a staple fixture in homes in the future.

Homeowners looking to install a home charger should keep a variety of benefits (and considerations) in mind. For instance, having a charger at home will not only be more convenient and allow for predictability in your charging routine, but having a charger installed can increase your home’s value should you decide to sell in the future. Regarding considerations for installation, the charger should ideally be installed on the same side of the garage as the vehicle’s charge port, within 15 to 20 feet. The charger will also need to be at least 18 inches off of the garage floor, according to one post from The Spruce, which further advises ensuring that the charger is within range of your home’s Wi-Fi network (or able to access cellular communications) — to name just a few key factors.

The roles that AI may play

Home features that make use of artificial intelligence (AI), may also become staples in the future. According to one Forbes article that highlights predictions from members of Forbes Technology Council as to which smart-home technologies will become basic features within the next decade, this includes AI-powered indoor environmental control and technology used to predict and optimise energy usage (to highlight just a couple). In regard to AI powered environmental control, the post highlights how such systems will control ‘various aspects of the home, such as lighting, temperature, security and entertainment,’ according to Alexey Dubov of Mighty Buildings.

Concerning technology used to predict and optimise energy usage, on the other hand, AI can help residents optimise their energy consumption in order to save money while building a more sustainable planet, according to Somdip Dey of Nosh Technologies. When looking at how AI might transform other technological features of the home, home security systems is a likely possibility. According to one post from the European Business Review, the roles that AI may play could involve greater automation, better surveillance, and quicker response time.

Tech features for a greener household

According to survey results from 2020, almost seven in ten think climate change is “a very, or extremely serious, problem.” While environmentally friendly choices such as bamboo flooring and sustainable architecture will likely become more common in order to lessen negative environmental impacts, there are a variety of tech-forward home features that are likely to become more common in homes of the future, too. Rolling Stone brings to light several innovative and eco-conscious home features, from smart air conditioners to smart water detectors (which work to identify leaks and avoid wastefulness and property damage). Smart thermostats, such as Google’s Nest Thermostat is just another innovative integration mentioned, as the device learns your habits by recognising when you typically adjust your temperature, thus heating/cooling your home in the most efficient way possible while bringing to light a glimpse of what could be commonplace in homes in the future.

Technology already plays a major part in our day to day lives, though it’s expected to become even more so when considering what future homes will look like. From AI integration to features that put the environment at the forefront of one’s home, there’s no question that homes of tomorrow will have much to offer.
