So, you’ve taken the plunge and decided to move to Dubai! Whether it be for a job, a partner, or just a change of scenery, moving to a new country is an exciting and (sometimes) challenging new chapter. You can never be over-prepared for such a big life-changing event so make sure that you have as much organized as possible. Read on and check out our top tips before your big move to the UAE.

1. Plan Ahead

The best thing to do when relocating to any new country is to have a place to live already sorted. It will take the stress out of your arrival and you’ll avoid having to panic search whilst staying in a hotel. If you’re all in on staying for a long time then ship over your most-loved items and have some help on hand to get all your stuff in your home as you get there. There are plenty of movers and packers in Dubai that will be able to assist you. Look for a place with monthly rent to avoid being tied into long contracts in case you want to move to another location around the city.

2. Organize Employment

Once you have a visa sorted for work, the next step is to find a job. Having a guaranteed contract in place is the best option, as you know that you’ll be receiving regular paychecks to keep your rent paid and food on the table. Let’s face it, Dubai is expensive! A solid job is a necessity for your survival and if you’re making the move on your own, you may not have any friends or family out there to rely on in tough times. A permanent job will give you the security you need to make your life a success. Plus, the saying ‘Work hard, play hard’ has never rung truer than in Dubai.

3. Perfect Your Packing List

Obviously, you’ll need to buy a lot once you are there but take as much with you from home as possible to save on money. Think wisely about your clothing choices. Dubai is more conservative than many western countries that you may be used to. Respecting the culture of the people and land is super important and you’ll want to avoid anything that is deemed offensive. Even though it’s hot and sunny, make sure you take clothes that fully cover your body in case you visit certain areas. That being said, there are plenty of places in and around Dubai that are full of professional tourists and ‘normal’ summer clothes are fine to wear.

4. Think About Switching Your License

Driving is a popular mode of transport in Dubai if you work or live outside of the Dubai Metro train line. You’ll need a UAE license to drive if you’re a resident so you’ll need to make the switch if you’re thinking about getting a car. If you’re from the US or UK, this is generally pretty easy. If you’re from elsewhere in the world you will likely need to retake your test. Just bear in mind, Dubai drivers have their own driving style (fast!) and there can be a lot of traffic.
