Why you Should Freshen a Mattress Every 6 Months or Less
Dead skill cells, body oils, bodily fluids and more accumulate on a mattress over time and it is essential to refresh a mattress every 6 months or less.

Did you know that flipping your mattress (head-to-toe) will ensure a longer lifespan and a good night's sleep? Did you also know that you should freshen a mattress every 6 months or so, or at least in line with the change of seasons? The former is self-explanatory in that flipping the mattress from head-to-toe means that you get full use of the entire mattress and not just one spot. If you have a mattress that can be flipped over - even better. That means you have four options to refresh the mattress - top-to-toe and flip over.
But what is just as important and even more essential is to freshen the mattress as often as possible but at least every 6 months. Why, might you say? Think about all the dead skills cells that you shed every single night, the oils that your body produces, and that doesn't even cover all the bodily fluids on the bed. Yes, the sheets will help to contain a lot of that, but not all of it and a mattress protector will add another layer of protection so long as it is also cleaned regularly, but it is always better to refresh the actual mattress itself.
How to Refresh a Mattress
Option 1 - Use a vacuum with HEPA filter
Vacuum cleaners that have a HEPA filter are the best possible way to clean and refresh a mattress. DO make sure that the vacuum cleaner is empty and that the filter is clean.
While it isn't always possible, take the mattress outdoors and place it on your lawn or a clean surface to give it a thorough cleaning with the vacuum cleaner. Clean the top and bottom of the mattress as well as the sides.
Treat mould spots on a mattress by spraying with a small quantity of hydrogen peroxide and using a SOFT scrubbing brush. Allow to air dry completely before re-making the bed.
Sunshine is nature's anti-bacterial treatment and placing a mattress outside in the sun for a few hours will reduce the likelihood of bed bugs, mould, or mildew.
Option 2 - Use Bicarbonate of Soda
As a natural deodoriser, bicarb is perfect for refreshing a mattress without any damage whatsoever. Bicarb will also help to remove any odours from the mattress and leave it smelling fresh. Any areas stained with (brown) sweat stains can be treated with bicarb.
Allow plenty of time to sprinkle the surface of the mattress with bicarb. Use a soft brush to rub the bicarb into the surface fibres and then leave it on for the entire day before using a vacuum cleaner to remove the powder. Repeat this process the next day for the other side of the mattress.
Use a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter to thoroughly clean the top, bottom, and sides of a mattress.
For extra freshness, I like to use a lavender scented linen spray on the mattress, but you can also sprinkle a few drops of essential oil directly onto the mattress.
