Whether you live in a dorm room with a roommate or two, or you live in a luxury student suite like those offered through The Quad at York, you’ll want to make your space your own, especially since it will be your home for a large part of the year. Dorm rooms aren’t known for their large, wide-open spaces, so you’ll want to incorporate as many space-saving designs as possible. Here are some of the top DIY projects that will instantly spruce up your college dorm room.

Recover a Desk Chair

Your dorm room will probably include a chair that goes with the built-in or included desk, but you don’t have to use the chair that’s there. Find an old chair at a thrift shop, choose some pretty fabric, and recover the chair to suit your style. While you can’t recover the chair that comes with the room because you’ll have to leave it behind when you leave, the chair you do recover will instantly make your room seem more cozy.

Create Your Own Desk Organizer

Desk supplies are not cheap, but you’re going to need some way to organize all your pens and pencils and other desk necessities. A great way to create a desk organizer that looks expensive, but really isn’t is to gather several round containers of varying heights. Vases, empty jars, glass vials, and other round containers are perfect for this purpose. Attach the containers to a thin board (about 1/2-inch thick) using super glue. Then paint the entire thing a color you enjoy. You’ll have a wonderful desktop organizer that contains all your small supplies.

Add Ambiance With a Light-Up Sign

Neon lights are extremely expensive, but you can get the same effect and display whatever words you want with just a little work. One a large piece of paper, write a word or phrase in script. Using needle nose pliers, bend 16-gauge steel wire into the shape of the word or phrase, using your script as a guide. Carefully glue battery-operated neon electroluminescent wire to the 16-gauge steel wire starting with the end furthest from the battery pack. Secure the electroluminescent wire to the steel wire with binder clips until the glue has dried. Once it has, just hang your light and plug it in.

Floating Nightstand

Whether you have a loft for your bed or you just need more surface space in your dorm room, a floating nightstand can solve your space issue. Cover the exterior of a magazine file with sticky-backed paper. You can also glue non-stickered paper on, but it will provide a smoother surface if you choose sticky-backed paper. Line the inside of the magazine file with a different colored sticker paper and paint the edges of the file in colors that contrast with the inside and out. When dry, turn the file on its side and hang with removable hooks. Just be sure the hooks are rated for the amount of weight you’ll be putting on the file.

Conclusion

There are plenty of ways to make your dorm room feel homey without breaking the bank. These DIY projects will get you started, but there are plenty more design ideas to turn your room into your haven.
