Every homeowner looks forward to the arrival of spring, whether it's spring blossoms and the first sign of new growth, or the opportunity to bring a fresh, new look to the home as a welcome for a new season. The renewal that spring brings to the garden is a reminder that we can do the same to the interior of our homes... give rooms a fresh, new look that is welcoming and comforting and sets us on the right track for the year ahead.

Gather your cleaning supplies

Nothing can be more rewarding than cleaning away the cobwebs, putting winter textiles into storage, and freshening up your home interior. Spring cleaning has been a time-honoured tradition for many and still today many like to set aside a day or two or weekend to give the house a clean from top to bottom. I prefer to give myself an entire week to clear out and clean cupboards, packing away what is not needed and sorting out what needs to be donated or thrown out. This week signifies a clean slate for the year ahead, and while many like to do this just before the New Year, I find that time too busy and too hot to clean the entire house.

SPRING CLEANING TIP 1

Clean the coils at the back of your refrigerator, air conditioner filters, ceiling fans, etc., as these need cleaning at least once a year.

SPRING CLEANING TIP 2

Pull-out and lift furniture to check for dust bunnies. These love to collect in dark corners and where furniture does not get moved often.

SPRING CLEANING TIP 3

Take mattresses outdoors for a few hours of sunshine to disinfect and get rid of bed bugs. When putting the mattresses back on the bed, give them a flip.

Freshen your home interior

After doing a thorough spring cleaning, the next thing you might want to do is go through the house room by room to see what needs to be done. After being closed tight for winter, or perhaps you haven't decorated in quite a while, there are bound to be areas that could do with a new look or a makeover for an update. Even if it is just adding a new wall gallery, hanging some art, fitting new curtains or rugs, or just replacing worn-out cushions, every home needs refreshing, and spring is the perfect opportunity.

SPRING CLEANING TIP 4

You can easily refresh your home decor by swapping out textiles for new ones, whether it is curtains, cushions, or rugs.

One quick and easy way to give any room a new look without spending a cent is to move furniture around. A simple shuffle and you have a new look that instantly feels fresh. Add a vase or two of spring flowers, a bowl of potpourri or a few scented candles and the look is complete. If you haven't moved furniture around in a long time, perhaps also consider hiring carpet cleaners to do a deep clean.

SPRING CLEANING TIP 5

It doesn't cost you anything to give any room a deep clean and then move furniture around for a new look.

Tackle home maintenance

August and September are the months when homeowners on the Highveld grab a weekend or two to attend to any maintenance and repairs that need to be done, particularly in advance of the rainy season when it comes to roof leaks, blocked gutters, signs of damp, etc. Taking the time now to inspect your property and assess what needs to be done will give you peace of mind until next year that you are on top of things and that, barring any unexpected surprises, the house is in good condition.

SPRING CLEANING TIP 6

Every homeowner needs to be involved in home maintenance if you want your home to retain its value and prevent expensive repairs. Give yourself a weekend to inspect the property to see what needs to be done.

Prepare the garden for spring

Even if you are not a regular gardener and prefer to have a garden service handle everything that needs to be done, spring is a wonderful time to add some colour with annuals and perennials. Most of these don't even need to be planted in beds or borders but can be potted into plant containers for around a patio or deck or hanging baskets to add a splash of much-needed colour. It is the one time of the year when a garden becomes a kaleidoscope of colour and a spectacular welcome to spring.

SPRING CLEANING TIP 7

A few trays of colourful annuals or perennials will bring colour to the garden through spring and into summer.
