The prices for everything just seem to keep going up. Just when you think the price for groceries surely must have reached their highest, items in the grocery store go up again. It is hard to keep a tight rein on a household budget when everything keeps changing and that is why now might be a good idea to consider homemade, natural alternatives for household cleaners - natural alternatives that have been used for hundreds of years and are still used today.
Natural Ingredients Every Home Should Have
There are a few staples that every home should have and with these basic ingredients you can do a whole lot of house cleaning. To make an al-natural furniture polish you will need the following:
- • White spirit vinegar
- • Olive oil
- • Lemon juice
- • Essential oil - your favourite scent
To make this natural furniture polish you combine 250ml of white spirit vinegar with 250ml of olive oil and add 100ml of concentrated lemon juice. Mix this well in a bottle you can use to store it in or a spray bottle. You can add a few drops of essential oil to leave a fresh scent in the room and some of my favourites are neroli, orange, citronella, cedar or sandalwood.
Have a soft cloth for applying the polish and another one for wiping away any excess that remains on the surface.
= Saving you R110!
There are plenty more natural or homemade cleaners that use the main ingredients mentioned at the top of this page, such as the following:
This jewellery cleaner uses salt baking powder, and aluminium foil and uses ion transfer as a way to clean all types of jewellery without damaging delicate pieces. I used it on gold, silver and pewter jewellery.
A recipe for a homemade cleaner that is eco-friendly and can be used to clean just about anything, from dirty sinks to grubby countertops,. Adding white spirit vinegar to the cleaner breaks down bacteria, while hydrogen peroxide naturally cleans and shines. Plus, this squeaky-clean concoction only costs cents per bottle.
Using nothing more than white spirit vinegar, clean water, dishwashing liquid and a teaspoon of alcohol will clean and keep floors shiny and hygienic.
More Natural Cleaners for The Home
It’s easy to make your own green cleaning supplies using basic ingredients such as baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar, and salt. Though some take a little more elbow grease than conventional cleaners, they are a lot safer when you consider that many conventional household cleaners also sully the environment with ingredients that can contaminate the air, water, and soil when they are manufactured, used, and thrown away. Cleaning products with phosphates, for example, can cause “dead zones” in lakes and streams.
Is your cleaning really as clean as you think it is? In the battle to keep your living space clean and healthy, are you using conventional cleaning products with caustic and toxic ingredients? They can be just as harmful as the grime and bacteria they’re meant to eliminate.
