Cleaning is rarely anyone's favorite chore. After a long week of work, socializing, and general life, the last thing any of us feel like doing is coming home and starting a cleaning routine. It is too easy to allow weeks to pass by without taking action, and it may be that you get used to living in a messy home, and barely notice the debris building up around you.

While you may think it doesn't hurt, the truth is that there can be many unwanted side effects to living in a dirty environment, and these can have serious repercussions for your health. To encourage you to pick up the vacuum, we have a list of the top visitors you could inadvertently end up sharing your home if you slack on the cleaning—you will be scrubbing in no time!

Bedbugs

Perhaps one of the nastiest effects of a dirty home is the moving in of unwanted visitors: namely, bedbugs. If this isn't tackled as soon as you become aware of the problem, an infestation can spread until you are forced out while the pros take over your bedroom.

To prevent this, stop bedbugs from moving in in the first place. Make sure your bedding is washed regularly on a high temperature, and save yourself time, money and effort in the long term.

Fridge Friends

Cleaning the fridge is another unpleasant task, but neglecting this area leads to more than a nasty smell. Make sure you clean out your refrigerator regularly, checking any use-by dates and throwing out anything which is going off or is expired.

It is also a good idea to regularly clean out the inside with hot soapy water to keep it smelling fresh. Eating food which has gone bad will not only ruin the taste of your dinner, it will introduce bacteria into your body, and this could lead to serious issues such as salmonella or other diseases.

Dust Mites

Mites often arrive with bedbugs and tend to be the result of dust, debris, and general muck hanging around for too long. Dust mites can cause itching and allergies and are really not the kind of housemates you want to share your space with. If that isn't enough to motivate you into a cleaning frenzy, consider the fact that dust tends to be primarily composed of your shed skin cells—pass the vacuum!

Creepy Critters

Your kitchen is another area which needs to be kept in good shape to avoid ants and other unwanted guests. Leaving out food—particularly sweet food such as sugar—draws these guys like bees to honey, and before you know it, you could end up with a serious infestation. Take a moment to consider the thought of thousands of tiny ant feet stomping through the food you are planning to eat.

While there’s no need to keep your house white-glove clean, some simple maintenance cleaning can go a long way to keeping your home healthy.
