A modern desk on the cheap!

If you are setting up a home office, or space to work at home, you're going to need a desk. This modern desk is made using a couple of secondhand filing cabinets, a glass top, and an inexpensive hollow core door.

YOU WILL NEED:

Pair of cabinets or pedestals

Hollow-core door

5mm safety glass cut to size of door

Wood filler

Silicone bumpers

Rust-Oleum 2X or Universal spray paint

Prominent Select Sheen

Paintbrush and foam roller

120-grit sandpaper and sanding block

Rust-Oleum 2X gloss in your choice of colour

Buy everything you need for this project at your local Builders Warehouse. Keep an eye on your local press for details on special offers for hollow-core doors, as you can pick these up for about R300.

HERE'S HOW:

1. Use wood filler to cover up any rough edges at the bottom, sides and top of the door. This isn't always necessary, but some cheaper doors may need a bit of touch up for a nice, neat edge.

2. Let the wood filler dry and then sand smooth with a sanding block. You can easily make your own sanding block with a scrap piece of timber or board.

3. Paint the door with a foam roller and paintbrush. Paint any detail on the door with the paintbrush and then go over this with the foam roller to smooth. You can buy hollow-core doors with or without detail, so choose the style that works best for you.

4. Allow the paint to dry before adding silicone bumpers to each corner, and along the front and back edge.

Spray the cabinet / pedestals in your choice of colour, add the newly painted door and top off with a piece of safety glass cut to the size of the door desktop.
