Having a dedicated space allocated for a home
office or study area is quickly becoming a way
of life for many families, as either or both
parents work from home and children spend their
time with online learning and studying. Even a
small home office provides you with a place to
set up your laptop or tablet and catch up on
daily news, interests, or work. A full home office outlay can be costly, especially if your employer isn’t subsidising the setup, so it makes sense to rent the
office furniture you need.
While
designing a home office that meets your wants and
needs is essential, so is ensuring that the room
stays organised and tidy, and even more so if
the home office or study area is open to the
rest of the living space.
With the
above in mind, take inspiration from the home
office and study spaces and use them to design
and organise your home office.

without having to search to find it.

Why Organisation is Important
No matter if it is your home, your work
office or your home office, organisation is
essential if you want things to run smoothly.
Being surrounded by chaos permanently
leads to feeling unsettled or anxious and
ultimately affects our health. An organised life
is a happier and more relaxed life and one that
is also more productive, both at home and at
work.
Organising a home office, like tidying up a home, saves you time on daily tasks and lets you complete these faster and more efficiently.
Getting organised is not a difficult job and, if given thought and done properly, you can continue
to be organised in your work and life.

Wall-Mounted or Freestanding Shelves
Some people prefer open storage shelves while
others, mainly those that aren't as fussy about
keeping their home organised, prefer to keep
things out of sight. By now you should know what
type of person you are and whether or not you
can keep open shelves neat and tidy or if it is
a better option to have storage with doors or
drawers. I tend to be the latter and like to
keep my disorganisation behind closed doors!
Installing shelving on a wall or buying a
standing shelf or oversized bookcase gives is a
reasonably inexpensive method of organisation.
Shelves are easily mounted onto a wall, but if
this is not possible, a freestanding shelf unit
or large bookcase can be used to contain all
your office essentials. Builders stock a selection
of floating and other types of wall shelving as
well as a range of freestanding storage shelves and the like.
If you are working on a tight budget, you could always be on the lookout for a second-hand bookcase that can be converted
office organisation, or perhaps you already have an old bookcase that can be given a new lease on life with a makeover?
An organised home office doesn't mean that you
must spend money to achieve it.
Here's a clever way to upcycle an old bookcase.
Sand and paint and then turn it on its side to mount
onto the wall and provide storage for
files and office accessories.

Shelves are a great way to organise all your office essentials, but it is also important that you incorporate boxes or baskets for items that would normally collect on a desktop. A drawer unit or two is also helpful but it all depends on whether you want to make do with what you already have at home or invest in some additional pieces of furniture for the office.
Having basic DIY skills and a few power tools gives
you the opportunity to make custom furniture for a home office,
or even just modify readymade pieces to fit your needs.

Closed Storage Organisation
Being a messy worker myself, I understand when things get so hectic that you simply cannot find the time to keep your home office neat and clean as a pin! That is when you need to look at storage that helps keep your office organised while also keeping clutter out of sight.
Anything with drawers or doors is perfect for keeping the home office presentable, although you will still need to make an effort to tidy and organise
cupboards and drawers regularly. After all, the purpose of this article is to be more organised.
Custom storage such as the drawer units below can easily be assembled and painted to provide much-needed organisation for a home office or study space.

Wall-Mounted Organisation
Now that we have covered organisation for
files and office essentials, it is time to look
at items that you use daily. You
ideally want these to be easily accessible and
possibly even in your line of sight if they are
to remind you of appointments or events. For
this, you can look at a pegboard organisation
system, use a whiteboard or chalkboard, or
even a softboard where you can use pins to keep
everything in place.
Pegboards are not that easy to find but it also isn't that difficult to make
a
custom pegboard using materials you can purchase at any
Builders store and make for little cost. A whiteboard will cost a bit more but there is still the option of making your own chalk paint board
using readily available blackboard spray paint or can paint.
Pegboards offer the perfect solution for organisation
of items you use on a daily basis.

Mounting a whiteboard or chalkboard onto a wall above or next to a desk is handy for work or study, and the kids can use it as well. It is a good idea not to spray or paint chalkboard onto the wall, as this is solvent-based paint and difficult to remove or cover up. Spray onto a 3mm-thick masonite or hardboard and then adhere to the wall with heavy-duty double-sided tape.

The Bottom Line
It doesn't matter if you work from home on a casual basis or your employer has set everything up for you to work away from the office, being organised as you work lets you be more productive and able to do what needs to be done without stressing out. Running an office at home takes a bit of getting used to and if you can make it easier with a neat workspace and a clutter-free environment - all the better.
