Black and white contemporary kitchen

Sometimes, buying off-plan or a ready-built home means a standard builder's kitchen. Though some kitchens are created a little too equally, they can always be revamped and modified so long as there is imagination and perseverance to go around.

This recently built home came with a standard builder’s kitchen. It had everything it needed except personality and style. Enter Capitol Design, who injected new life into the home by giving his clients the contemporary kitchen they wanted.

The flooring was the driving factor behind this kitchen makeover. The dark floors lead to a striking black and white palette that’s as mesmerizing to the senses as it is practical and efficient for the young family it serves.

Below, the dynamic backsplash is of elongated subway tiles. The final touch, a glass dining table surrounded by black chairs and black custom benches, invites the family to enjoy all the culinary benefits the kitchen has to offer.

Topping the perimeter cabinetry is polished granite that sparkles like crushed coal. The island reverses the pattern with its black-painted cabinets topped with white granite. The custom designed island, with storage on all four sides, was made to look like a table by using stainless steel posts to lift it off the floor. The posts, like the drawer pulls, tie in the hood, dishwasher, flush-mount refrigerator and wine cooler.

Flat panel doors were chosen for a contemporary look; but having too many would make the kitchen appear stark. To alleviate this, the added combination of ribbed glass and framed doors offer texture and dimension to each space.

Exemplifying the wall that contains the extraction system and to maintain a sense of symmetry and a balance, the extractor is flanked with open shelving painted black.
